Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and ten professional schools (Architecture, Art, Divinity, Drama, Forestry and Environmental Studies, Law, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Organization and Management) offer courses of study. Yale has 5200 undergraduates, 5500 graduate students, and 1500 faculty. The Yale University Library maintains collections of more than 10,000,000 volumes housed in Sterling Memorial Library, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Cross Campus Library, and more than twenty school and departmental libraries. The library system employs 138 librarians, 45 managerial staff, 361 library assistants, and 95 FTE student assistants. THE YALE MAP COLLECTION The Yale Map Collection, housed in Sterling Memorial Library, is one of the country's outstanding collections, housing more than 200,000 sheet maps and 4,000 atlases. While its coverage is international, the Collection has extraordinary strength in maps of North America, particularly the area that is now the United States. The Collection's interests are both historical and contemporary, print and non-print, with an aggressive program of growth through purchases, gifts, and depository arrangements. The Collection is staffed by one curator, one library service assistant, and student assistants. Maps are also collected at a number of other Yale libraries, notably the Geology Library, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Forestry and Environmental Studies Library, and Government Documents Center. THE CURATOR, YALE MAP COLLECTION The Curator serves as the Library's principal authority on the subject of maps in all formats. The Curator directs the day-to-day activities of the Yale Map Collection. In addition to selecting material for the Collection, managing its budget, and leading its staff, the Curator oversees maps cataloging and preservation, offers reference service, and is responsible for teaching, exhibitions, and publications based on the Collection. As part of the upcoming renovation of the Sterling Memorial Library, the Map Collection's quarters will be redesigned and expanded, and the Curator will head the necessary facilities planning. Working closely with other Yale librarians and with Yale faculty and students, the Curator will be responsible for coordinating the Library's overall collection building and service programs related to maps, as well as for leading efforts to apply new technologies to the storage and manipulation of geographic information. The Curator will also be responsible for contributing to the development and pursuit of overall Yale Library goals, objectives, and policies, as well as for contributing to map librarianship at the national level. The position reports to the Associate University Librarian with responsibility for research and educational services. QUALIFICATIONS The Library seeks candidates whose experience, publications, and contributions to the field beyond the local level demonstrate readiness to shape the Yale Map Collection and guide the Yale Library in the implementation of new systems for supporting research using geographic information. Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent experience; advanced academic training in history, geography, cartography, or related subjects; minimum of five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an academic library, research institution, or comparable institution related to maps; successful managerial experience including demonstrated ability to plan and implement projects and services, lead library staff, and work effectively with other members of a research-oriented community; knowledge of emerging information technologies; strong analytical and interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience in providing instruction is strongly preferred. SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary from a minimum of $36,700, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
