----------------------------Original message---------------------------- While attending the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping/American Society for Remote Sensing annual convention last week, I saw a demonstration of a soon to be released CD-ROM of potental interest. It's called GEOName Digital Gazetteer. The over 4 million names are from the official Defense Mapping Agency database and are approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Data can be exported to ArcView 2. Names data can be exported to a word processor or spreadsheet, too. It required a CD-ROM drive, 386 or faster, 8 MB RAM, 1 MB hard disk space, MS-DOS with Windows 3.X. There were ways to get at variant spellings. The company is GDE Systems Inc., P.O. Box 509008, Mail Zone 6100-J, San Diego, CA 92150-9008, 619-592-5153, fax: 619-592-5420. One of the people I spoke to was Edward M. Taylor (email: [log in to unmask]), and he listed a home page on his card of http://www.GDEsystems.Com. The price was yet to be determined. |===========================================================================| |Alberta Auringer Wood, Map Librarian, Memorial University of Newfoundland, | |St. John's, Newfoundland, CANADA A1B 3Y1. phone: 709-737-8892; | | fax: 709-737-2153; Internet: [log in to unmask] | |===========================================================================|
