Cloudsley Director To bring you up to date on the situation at the Metropolitan Library System in Oklahoma City, Director Lee Brawner has advised that libraries not only have a current disaster plan but one that is practiced regularly under a variety of disaster circumstances. When the staff felt the initial blast in Oklahoma City they did not know what the problem was but all staff quickly followed the plan and evacuated the building. There is no immediate need at the library as it remains closed and the area is cordoned off. Libraries around the country have offered children's materials to the Metropolitan Library System. The stench in the area is terrible according to what I have received from Linda Crismond, editor of the ULC Exchange. As I reported earlier, 85% of the windows were blown out but there is no structural damage to the building. The children from the federal day care center normally went to the library on a daily basis for a 10:30 a.m. storyhour and Lee Brawner reports that the staff of that department has been overwhelmed by the loss of the children and many staff members lost friends and even family in the blast. The library building has been sealed and they have no idea when they will be able to reopen.
