Should you be on Long Island between now and December 31, you might want to take a look at an exhibit I am curating. It is called "Long Island Maps and Their Makers," and is co-sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities and the University at Stony Brook. The exhibit consists of about eighty maps, a number of which are quite rare, covering the history of the mapping of Long Island from the middle of the sixteenth century to the present. It also includes assorted pieces of surveying equipment, a satellite, and a display of computer generated maps. The exhibit is being held at the Gallery of The Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, which is located at the corner of Main Street and Shore Road in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. Cold Spring Harbor is an attractive old town on the North Shore of Long Island, which can be easily reached from New York City by the Long Island Railroad. Our opening weekend will begin on Friday, June 16. On June 17 there will be a re-enactment of colonial surveying techniques by a group of people who like to dress up as members of the Engineers Corps of the British Army during the Revolutionary War. On June 18 I will give a lecture on colonial maps of Long Island. Additional lectures and events will be held in the fall. For further information send me an e-mail message or call me at (516) 632-7110.
