----------------------------Original message---------------------------- I've just acquired an undated road map of Ontario. Can anyone help me to date it. I presume either the U. of T. or the Toronto Public Library would be the most likely places to ask but others may know the map also. The title is "Ontario and Quebec Auto Road Map[,] Published by Imperial Oil Limited[,] 56 Church Street, Toronto". "Compiled by J.W. Tyrrell & Co.[,] Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers[,] Hamilton, Ont." Printed two sides, blue on white, ca. 51 x 51 cm. ea. side. West half extends from Sault Ste. Marie to Belleville and the East half from Belleville to Portland Maine. The title and compiler block appear on both sides, as does an advertisement for Premier Gasoline and Polarine Motor Oil. Draftsman was Thos. J. Kirk. J.W. Tyrrell was J.B. Tyrrell's brother and seems to be best known as a mining promoter and, with his brother, as having explored some of the Keewatin Territory in the 1890's. The Canadian Encyclopedia says he practiced in Hamilton until 1893 but makes no mention of a resumption of activity in that city after the Keewatin adventure. Can anyone fill me in with a brief history of the firm or where I can find out more about their map compilation or publishing history. Thanks in advance for your help.
