Map Librarians:

If your patrons want to look at maps of 'Area 51',
that remote stretch of Nevada where the Government
is supposed to be housing crashed UFO remains, etc.,
etc., dig out these two maps to impress them:

Cactus Flat, Nevada 1:100,000 satellite image map
(1984). This neat-o sheet shows an impressive
installation out there in the desert--and that was
10 years ago.

Contrast that with this map: Cactus Flat 1:100,000
metric topo sheet (1988), which shows only a modest
landing strip and tower in that location.

The NBC evening news (7/8/96) presented a piece on
this "secret" base, which has acquired a lot of
mystique among UFO fans. The Pentagon supposedly
refuses to admit that it even exists--though it
"shows up on Soviet satellite photos", according
to Tom Brokaw.

Well, Tom, it shows up on U.S. satellite photos,
too.
