Alice writes of the lack of historical maps which could be a lament for
many publications. We work quite closely, as you might imagine, with the
WGBH studio's here in Boston. We have at times pulled out several (not 3
or 4 but 30 or 40) maps for various productions only to have the Director
walk in and say these maps do not look old enough - while staring at a
1570 Ortelius - or they are not decorative enough, or how can they make
them curl on the edges, or this map is looks too good!  I could go "on and
on" but the artistic mind that creates these productions and the original
primary sources often clash in the production. I wish it weren't so.
