----------------------------Original message---------------------------- David Allen wrote, "It may surprise some of you to learn that the islands around New York harbor are not legally "islands" at all. Manhattan (New York County) has been regarded as part of the mainland for a long time because it is only separated from the Bronx by the shallow Harlem River. " Also, isn't part of the "legal" Manhattan on the Bronx side of the Harlem River anyway? If I remember right from living up there, the Inwood area is part of Manhattan but it's firmly attached to the Bronx shore. On the other hand, this may have been due to human intervention --older maps show the river curving up a bit further north. Anyone know? And does that mean that New York County doesn't make the cut as an "island county"? -Frank E. Reed http://www.clockwk.com/fer
