Related Duane, but actually, I think the topic relates more specifically
to libraries continued efforts to collect, describe and provide access
to spatial information for its' user community and attempting to manage
the change of that information from a paper format to a digital one.

ARL's and ESRI's efforts have enabled many of us to 'get at' the spatial
information and some of us to develop strategies for providing complex
public and technical services to the information, regardless of its
format. I happen to think that the efforts have been too closely
confined to the reference function and could benefit from a open
discussion.
