     XVIITH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE HISTORY OF
            CARTOGRAPHY (LISBON 6-10 JULY 1997)

     Closing date for the cheaper Registration Fee extended to
                         15 March
 
     ------------------------------------------------------------
 
     Because of unforeseen delays in the paper selection process
     for this conference, it will not be possible to convey the
     Selection Committee's decision to all those who submitted
     Abstracts for Papers or Posters by the agreed date, 15
     February.  The organisers apologise for this and hope that
     notification will be only briefly delayed.
 
     Since 15 February was also the closing date for the cheaper
     Registration Fee, it has been decided to extend that date to
     15 March.

     Exhibitions are always a major feature of these conferences.
     The following are planned for the Lisbon conference:
 
     1. Treasures of Portuguese Cartography from the 16th and
     17th centuries (National Archives of Torre do Tombo)
 
     2. Evolution of the Urban Cartography of Lisbon (City of
     Lisbon Museum)
 
     3. The Urban Cartography and Hydrography of Macao (Casa da
     Balanca)
 
     4. On the work of the Cartography Commission in the former
     Portuguese colonies in Africa, 1883-1936 (Cordoaria Nacional
     - the National Rope Factory)
 
     5. Cartography and Diplomacy: determining the Brazilian land
     borders in the 18th century (Cordoaria Nacional)
 
     6. An exhibit drawn from the collection of the Evora Public
     Library and District Archives, to which a visit will be made
     on July 11.
