----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Publication notice. Apologies for the delay in posting this. It is being cross-posted to MapHist, Maps-L and lismaps ------------------------ Li Xiaocong, A Descriptive Catalogue of pre-1900 Chinese Maps seen in Europe. Beijing: International Culture Publishing Corporation, 1996. ISBN 7-80105-477-6/K.50 ------------------------- The title transcribes as: Ouzhou shoucang bufen Zhongwen gu ditu xulu. The publisher transcribes as: Guoji wenhua chuban gongsi. The volume can be obtained at US dollars 9 [yes, nine] from: Zhang Hong Jia-1 Nanjixiang Hutong Beijing 100007 China They accept cheques, or payment made through the Bank of China, Beijing Branch, to the Zhang Hong account, no. 4014203-2014-072413-4. The book is a bilingual catalogue (Chinese and English) of Chinese maps preserved in various collections in ten European countries. It has 393 pages and 32 illustrations. The author, Prof. Xiaocong Li, is Associate Professor and Deputy Director, Centre for Chinese Medieval History Studies, Peking University. His catalogue is highly recommended and EXTREMELY cheap. Prof. Li spent several months with us in the British Library and I was happy to contribute a Preface. I suspect the publisher has done little to ensure that the work is reviewed. Perhaps any sinologist reading this would like to consider proposing a review, although they might have to forego the free copy! I hope that ways can be found to promote the book and thus encourage this valuable initiative. Prof. Li will need support if he is to make further trips to Europe to continue unearthing our Chinese cartographic treasures.
