SAN FRANCISCO WALKING TOUR AT M.A.G.E.R.T. CONFERENCE

STREETCAR TO SUBDUCTION WALK: TUESDAY JULY 1, 1:00-3:00 PM.

A short streetcar ride start our quick tour of a few geologic
exposures right in the heart of San Francisco that have resulted
from spreading ocean ridges, tectonic plate movement, and
subduction. These include mid-ocean ridge basalt, folded beds of
radiolarian chert and the mirror-smooth face of an earthquake
fault. Along the way we'll see Mint Hill (site of the "new" U.S.
mint) and historic Alamo Square (with the postcard views of
Victorian houses in the foreground and downtown high rises in the
distance). Then we'll walk along Buena Vista Park to Corona
Heights to get some nice views of the Bay Area (weather
cooperating). The walk will be about 3 miles long and include an
elevation gain of about 300 feet (wear comfortable shoes and
dress in layers). While there is no sign-up required, if you
think you will participate, please let Phil Hoehn know
([log in to unmask] or write Map Collection, Earth
Sciences and Map Library, Univ. of California, Berkeley, CA
94720-6000). This will help in estimating the number of handouts
needed.
We'll start at the main entrance of the Moscone
Convention Center (north side of Howard St., between 3rd and 4th)
PROMPTLY at 1:00, or at 1:05 p.m. in the lobby of the Pickwick
Hotel (5th & Mission).
