We have only heard undocumented stories from readers here at NYPL, concerning
imprisonments and worse, for people caught with detailed topos in the wrong
country at the wrong time. Extreme caution and good sense is advisable I would
think...Alice H., NYPL

I have just returned from a workshop on the Greek island of Kos and,
while there, asked about acquiring a 1:50,000 topo map. I was told that,
particularly at the moment because of slightly raised Greek-Turkish tensions,
members of the public - and especially foreigners - are not supposed
to have access to topo mapping of Greece at this scale. I searched
diligently, but couldn't find any official topo maps for purchase on the
island - only horrid 'tourist' maps that most undergraduate students
could improve the cartographic qualities of.

Also, nobody could tell me whether or not one would actually be inviting
trouble if they were to bring such a map with them, and be seen to
be using it openly? I'm going back to Greece in a couple of weeks' time,
this time on holiday, so would be interested to know this!
