----------------------------Original message---------------------------- I work at the Rotch Library of Architecture and Planning and I thought that I must be able to find a little something. I did a little looking and here's what I found. --Rebecca Aaronson Bulgaria- Madara Rider From "The Bulgarians: from pagan times to the Ottoman conquest" by D.M. Lang, 1976. Madara Horseman "Tervel died in the following year, but is immortalized in one of the three Madara inscriptions which flank the triumphant equestrian figure carved on a high cliff almost within view of the Bulgar capital of Pliska." p. 48 (on the map Pliska is about 50km west of Varna which is on the Black Sea.) "Pliska was not the only important architectural monument of the pagan Bulgar khans. At Madara, close to the Horseman relief, are extensive remains of fortified buildings, as well as those of the pagan temple." p. 122. (there is more info. on p. 123-4.) Bulgaria- Holloko From "Hungary: a guide book with 58 maps and 45 photos", 1971. "But there are old peasant houses protected as ancient monuments also at Parad, and the village of Holloko, in the heart of the Cserhat Mountains consists of such buildings almost in its entirety." p. 33 Directions! Road M21 from Hatvan: "AT 22.7 kms on M21 a road branches off to the west, to Holloko in the Cserhat Mountains." p. 127 Romania- Bietan and its fortified church Is this the same as Biertan? From "Histoire de l'architecture en Roumanie" by G. Ionesco From what I can gather from this text (in French) is that it is in Transylvania, near Sibiu. Listed in index as "Biertan, village, dep. de Sibiu." The map places Sibiu in Transylvania about 200 km Northwest of Bucurest. Hurez shows up about 75 km south of Sibiu. Romania- Monastery at Horezu Ibid. Is this the same as Hurezu, dep. de Vilcea? "L'ensemble du monastere de Hurez, dans le departement de Vilcea..." Algeria - Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad From "Recherches archeologiques a la Qal'a des Banu Hammad" by L. Golvin, 1965. "La Qal'a est situee a peu pres sur le 5e meridien Est et un peu au Sud du 36e parallele, dans le Djebel Maadid, massif des Monts du Hodna." p. 2. Also spelled Kalaa des Beni-Hammad. I hope this is helpful! Please let me know the results of your research.
