----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Thinking about the many maps of Chicago published over the decades by >different researchers and projects, I can't help but wonder if anybody is >currently putting together an electronic atlas of that city. A couple of interesting things are going on, but neither is really an electronic atlas. Prof. Robert Bruegmann and colleagues at the Univ of Illinois at Chicago are working on a rather ambitious Web teaching project that may eventually be a GIS repository for Chicago data and already has a number of fire insurance atlas pages and aerial photos. They have commissioned a couple of map series from me, including a series showing growth of the city since 1850 and expansion of transit lines. I don't have a URL handy for the nascent site; start at the UIC.edu home page and poke around the Art History department. Meanwhile, the Encyclopedia of Chicago History is being compiled, and will of course include maps, though little has yet been done about them. I am hoping my firm will get to work on them because of my own personal interest in Chicago history. The Univ of Chicago Press anticipates that the Encyclopedia will have a CD-ROM version containing material that goes beyond what is in the published book, so electronic maps will probably be part of that. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Dennis McClendon, Chicago CartoGraphics [log in to unmask]
