----------------------------Original message---------------------------- And may I add my congratulations to Alice Hudson and Nancy Kandoian on the publication of the latest issue of Meridian (no. 13, 1998) which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Map Division of The New York Public Library. Wonderful articles by Alice and Nancy (Nancy's is about cataloging the Slaughter Collection mentioned below by Linda), as well as Jean Ashton and David Allen. All those Perris atlases (the original property atlases of New York, William Perris, 1852-1854)--makes me homesick! Leave it to Alice to do such a remarkable double act: making the Map Division a jewel in the crown of map librarianship, as well as a jewel in the crown of New York! Way to go, Alice! ****************************************************************** April Carlucci 0171 412 7703 British Library Map Library [log in to unmask] ****************************************************************** PS If you don't subscribe to this journal of the Map and Geography Round Table of the American Library Association, you can order a single issue for $10 ($12 foreign), payable to ALA/MAGERT, from Jim Coombs, Maps Library, Southwest Missouri State University, 901 S. The lead (front page) story is headlined "Hundreds of Rare English Maps and Atlases Donated to Library." It continues "Lawrence Slaughter, an active supporter of the Library's Map Division until his death in 1996, never talked very much about his on map collecting. And so, when Mr. Slaughter's estate donated his private collection to the Library this past year, even Alice Hudson, the curator of the Map Division, was astonished by its richness and scope." The article goes on to describe some of the highlights of the collection. Congratulations to Alice for making the headlines. Linda Zellmer Map Librarian Arizona State University Libraries P.O.
