A few months ago, Phil Hoehn in the UC-S map librarians list asked a
question about special characters on the web and I wound up writing a
fairly lengthy response which I copied to this list.  About November,
the editor of a computer newsletter heard me talking about this issue
with some folks and asked me to write a longer piece for their
newsletter.  The whole works is now out on the Web at

At the end of that page is a link to the actual table of special
characters as defined in the HTML (v.3.2) Reference Specification.
 
Since Phil set me off down this path, please note that he gets credited
in the first paragraph.  ;-)
