Hiring Range: $30,000 to $45,000, depending upon qualifications and experience Benefits Eligible: Yes Position Summary: The University of Arizona invites applications for a social sciences Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist to develop and direct a laboratory focused on the use of GIS and related techniques in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, primarily serving a wide range of social science departments (e.g., anthropology, history, geography, political science, sociology). The successful applicant will be expected (1) to provide technical support to on-going research activities involving social science applications of remote sensing and GIS, computer cartography, and/or data analysis and visualization; (2) to engage actively in research, primarily through collaboration on research proposals and activities with faculty; (3) to supervise student assistants and interns; (4) to supervise computer and administrative support personnel in the lab; (4) to participate in GIS training and teaching within the University, including guiding student research; and (5) to foster links to groups in the earth and environmental sciences who use GIS and related technologies in interdisciplinary projects. Ongoing projects hoping to work with the lab include studies of agricultural change in Latin America, urbanization in Africa, population migration in the US, climate impacts on the economy of the Southwest, management of natural and cultural resources, and the assessment of the impact of transporting low-level radioactive waste in certain SW regions. The new GIS Lab is under the aegis of the SBS Research Institute, and the Social Sciences GIS Specialist reports to the director of SBSRI. This is an academic professional, year-to-year fiscal appointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon performance.
