Dear all,
Recently, on roadmaps-l, attached to a list of State road atlases by
DeLorme and other companies, the question was posed as to whether or
not there were similar atlases for the Provinces which would show all
the back roads. I replied noting the difference in size between the
States and most of the Provinces, and the different policies regarding
access to government digital base maps. Then I supplied information
on those I knew of, which follows below.
Since many of you do not subscribe to carta but may be interested
in the contents of this message, I am reposting it here for wider
distribution.
This is a compiled list of road atlases (well, one is more than a
road atlas, but very useful) of the Canadian Provinces. Map curator/
librarians from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Ontario have assisted.
Prices have been supplied where known and are, of course in Canadian
dollars.

Newfoundland Maps. 1:250,000. Dept of Environment and Lands, NF. Copies
available from: Lands Branch, Howley Bldg., P.O. Box 8700, St. John's, NF,
A1B 4J6. 1990. ISBN 0-920769-72-1. 54pp. spiral bound. Price $40.25

The most recent issue of A Map of the Province of Nova Scotia
(known to most as simply the Nova Scotia Map Book) was published
in 03/95 by Formac Publishing Company Ltd. ISBN 0-88780-230-3.
It is no longer spiral bound and is 96 pages. ISBN 0-88780-228-1 (pbk.)
Copyright is 1992 but this is a 1995 reprint of the 4th edition.

A provincial road atlas that is spiral bound is the one for New Brunswick.
It's entitled "New Brunswick Maps" published by the New Brunswick
Geographic Information Corporation in 1993 (ISBN 1-55048-972-0 94 pages
plus name index). It's very similar to the Nova Scotia map book but it's
at a scale of 1:150 000.

These map books are a great resource. Outdoor enthusiasts use the Nova
Scotia map book heavily. I believe last summer it was on the Nova Scotia
best sellers list for a few weeks running. People tend to use it the same
way people use the DeLorme atlases for the states. Unfortunately, they
don't have any of the value added info. that's present in DeLorme's
products (i.e. no suggested mountain bike routes, camping areas or canoe
routes etc.). I hope this information is helpful!

Alberta Recreational Atlas. PTC Phototype Composing Ltd., Victoria, 1997.

>of Victoria, B.C. 4th edition, 1997. (iv), 142pp. $23.95 Cdn [ca. $17.00
>U.S.] Scale still 1:600,000 Drawn relief.
>
>Ontario Atlas. Markham, Ont.: Allmaps Canada, 1997. Copyright Rand McNally.
>Forgot to check number of pages. Southern Ontario scale 1:250,000 shows all
>back roads. Northern Ontario scale not given. Maps look like enlarged from
>official road map. Whatever, I'm sure they don't show all the back roads.
>District maps for Northern Ontario show areas surrounding larger towns. Scale
>varies. $18.95 Cdn [ca. $13.50 U.S.]
>
>Alberta is covered by a series of Provincialy issued "Access maps" in both
>topographic and planimetric editions at 1:250,000. They sell for $7.85 each
>and it takes 50 of them to cover Alberta.
These appear to have been the model for the following publication
which covers the petroleum areas of Northeastern British Columbia,
all but a very few of the Alberta "Access maps", and a large part
of the populated areas of Saskatchewan extending from about Meadow
Lake in the north, southeastward to east of Regina.
>
>Canadian Oilfield Gas Plant Atlas. Second edition.
>Edmonton: June Warren Publishing, 1997. Spiral bound. $150.00 Cdn
>[ca. $78.00 U.S.] Slightly less than 1:250,000.
>It shows much to do with the oil and gas industry against a background which
>does show all the back roads. What isn't here that appears on the access maps
>are the seismic lines cut for exploration. Those are invaluable to hunters
>and fishers as they provide both access to backcountry and rescue when they
>get lost or shoot each other. No relief is shown.
>The access maps by the way can be purchased laminated and punched for
$11.95 ea.
>to fit in a plastic binder slightly larger than a DeLorme atlas.
