It can be either a part time or full time position. It is a temporary position lasting 6 months to a year, depending upon the individual s schedule. It is funded via the U.S. Sea Grant program. There is a possibility of extensions. Estimated start date is May 1998. This position will not necessarily require full time occupancy at the Oxford Laboratory. If facilities are adequate at the individual s location, many of the tasks can be accomplished there. The primary job duty would be to interface data output from a numeric environmental model to a GIS format, for display, analysis and model feedback purposes. The model involves interactions between the Chesapeake Bay oyster, environmental factors, and two parasites that cause major mortality in Bay oyster populations. Project participants include the Cooperative Oxford laboratory (Maryland Department of Natural Resources and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: GIS data integration), Rutgers University (oyster physiology), and Old Dominion University (modeling). The position will work from a conceptual Entity/Relationship framework, to program numeric output and associated environmental data into an automated GIS display and query environment. Principal software envisioned for this task is UNIX ArcInfo and PC based GIS (MapInfo or ArcView). The grid module of ArcInfo will be employed for data analysis. PC based vector GIS programs will be used for display and query. Programming experience is necessary for this position, as is a strong background in GIS operations. UNIX ArcInfo (including GRID and programming skills, or another applicable full feature GIS software) and PC based GIS operations and programming (MapInfo or ArcView) are needed.
