Dear all,
Along with the piece Linda Zellmer noted regarding Ellis Island,
my morning paper carried the following under the Headline posted
above:
        Taiwan's Nationalist are recognizing Beijing's existence -
at least on maps. The Cabinet's Mainland Affairs Council announced
Tuesday that maps of China printed here will now be drawn according
to the names and administrative zones used by Beijing's current
government, instead of those used by the Nationalist government
before it fled to Taiwan in 1949.
The shift signals Taiwan's willingness to recognize China's
legitimacy - and Taiwan's hope that China will reciprocate. The
Nationalists left the mainland after losing the civil war to Mao
Tse-tung's Communists. China considers Taiwan a renegade province.
