One of my patrons pointed this article out to me before I saw the
MAPS-L notice. On p. 78 is the sentence: "In their time, the USGS
15-minute maps--referred to as "medium scale"--were considered the
best for backcountry travel on trails, but the agency recently
discontinued the series." What the agency recently did is quit selling
them. They haven't made them for quite a few years. I've had several
patrons ask for 15s and they don't seem to know that they are
superceded, and have been for some time!!

Kudos to Mary Larsgaard for the article about her and the map collection
at UCSB in the April 1998 issue of _Backpacker_.
The article is on page 76 (along with a picture of Mary) and is entitled
"I'm Mary and I'm a Topoholic."
