----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Miriam, Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I just received my copy ($20 from amazon.com) and it is wonderful. Great example of how maps can convey culture and politics. Thanks! Roger -----Original Message----- From: Miriam Kerndt, Geography Lib. [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Friday, May 22, 1998 3:38 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: new atlas: Maya atlas ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Emeritus Geography Prof. William Denevan alerted me to an atlas which could only be called a bargain at $25 ! Maya atlas: the struggle to preserve Maya land in southern Belize / compiled by the Maya people of southern Belize; with the Toledo Cultural Council and the Toledo Alcodes Association; with the assistance of Indian Law Resource Center, GeoMap Group, UC Berkeley, and Society for the Preservation of Education and Research. Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Books; Emeryville, CA: Dist. to the book trade by Publishers Group West, 1997. isbn 1556432569 OCLC 36993632 LC 97-15801/MAPS Low price comes in part from a subsidy of grants from the National Geographic Society and others. Although he is too modest about it, the work was organized by Bernard Nietschmann, Geography Dept. UCal, where cartography grads with Indians (Native Central Americans?) assistance did much of the work, reports Prof. Denevan. We were so impressed after seeing his copy, that I alerted the appropriate area studies bibliographer, who also purchased a copy. That may not seem unusual if you have had some collection budget increases, but there have been none at the Madison campus for much too long.
