"The shells were dropping in the water and machine gun bullets
whizzing over our heads. We ran straight for a shale wall and as I ran
from the boat, I saw the bullets tearing up the sand on either side of
me," recalls Roger Brugger, a soldier with the 16th Infantry during the
storming of Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
The audio clip of Brugger's recollections is one of many in
Britannica Online's newly launched Web site entitled "NORMANDY: 1944."
The special feature will offer a virtual march through the World War II
invasion by means of articles and essays, interactive maps, audio and
video clips, and transcripts of first-person accounts. "Normandy: 1944"
is located on the Britannica Online Home Page or at http://normandy.eb.com.
The contents of the site will be introduced over a five-week period.
Coverage will begin with the invasion's planning, followed by information
about the actual invasion on the anniversary of D-Day (June 6).
The remaining weeks will cover the fighting inland, the liberation of
Paris, and the invasion from a historical perspective. The entire presentation
will be available beginning June 26.
FEATURES OF THE SITE
* personal recollections, from the stories of American soldiers to
accounts of French civilians
* photographs, transcripts, and newsreels from a variety of sources,
including the National Archives

history
