UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA LIBRARY FACULTY OPENING May 28, 1998 Associate Director, Geospatial and Statistical Data Center The University of Virginia Library is seeking a creative, enthusiastic librarian who will help to shape and direct this electronic center=92s = future, aggressively implement and evaluate services, and ensure delivery of quality social sciences data and geographical information service in a dynamic environment The Center was recently created by combining the Geographic Information Center and the Social Sciences Data Center. Job Description: The Associate Director reports to and assists the Center Director in overall planning and operation=3B schedules public service activities=3B supervises student assistants=3B collects, creates, and maintains print and electronic documentation for services and tools=3B develops web resources=3B provides reference and information service relating to government publications, social sciences data, and maps=3B serves as a resource for geographic information and statistical data products and services=3B organizes and promotes staff and user education programs for Government Information Resources (GIR) and the Center, and teaches classes in relevant areas=3B manages print map collections and related cartographic products=3B serves as= a member of the GIR management team participating in collection development, goal-setting, staff development, resource management, information delivery, and problem resolution. Qualifications and Experience: Required: Master=92s degree in library science or a related field. = Knowledge of and ability to use computer information technologies (especially GIS and/or statistical software) effectively. Ability to work and communicate effectively with users, library staff, and the University community. Commitment to professional growth and development. Organizational and supervisory skills. Strong service orientation. Preferred: Knowledge of earth sciences, geography or statistics. User education or teaching experience. Demonstrated familiarity with the methods of scholarly research, especially as related to geographic, statistical and government information. Environment: The Library system consists of ten libraries, with independent libraries for health sciences, law, and business. The libraries serve 11,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The historic Grounds and Thomas Jefferson=92s Academical Village provide a gracious backdrop for teaching, learning, and research. The Library is a leader in developing the digital library, with four electronic enters. The Geospatial and Statistical Data Center is located in the Government Information Resources area.
