The GDL, in cooperation with other projects, seeks to improve remote access to GIS data on campus. This will include design and development of a remote search and access system for geospatial datasets held by the College Library and the Harvard-MIT Data Center; programming development and integration of new GIS data into the Massachusetts Electronic Atlas using ArcView and ArcView IMS; and long range planning for access and archival storage of geospatial datasets. The GIS Specialist will share in providing technical support to the Harvard community; serve as a liaison between the Library and a variety of other departments on campus involved with GIS. This person is also responsible for installation and maintenance of GIS software and data on the Map Collections GIS computer cluster; will order new digital GIS data and software; and will assist patrons with a variety of other geospatial software; and provide reference assistance within the map collection. The Harvard Map Collection, the oldest map collection in America, is home to over 400,000 maps, 15,000 atlases and books, hundreds of digital cartographic files, and a GIS computer cluster. Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in geography, computer science, or related discipline. Master's degree in geography, computer science, or related discipline preferable. Professional experience in conducting GIS projects involving data management, integration, spatial analysis, and map production. GIS needs assessment and academic research experience desirable. Skills in a variety of geospatial data processing software such as ArcView, ArcView extensions, ArcInfo, MapInfo, ERDAS, PCI, or CAD preferred. Skills in relational database design, web-page design, and experience using ESRI IMS desirable. Excellent public service attitude and desire to work with a diverse clientele. Experience working in a Windows NT environment, with Microsoft Office and Adobe suite of products, with software installation, and printer/plotter maintenance preferred. Excellent oral, written, and graphic communication skills with experience in needs assessment and creating instructional documentation. Compensation: Anticipated hiring salary in the low-mid 40's.
