The 19th International Cartographic Association conference and the 11th General Assembly meeting of the ICA will be meeting in Ottawa. This world-class event will be held at the outstanding facilities of the Ottawa Congress Centre and the adjoining hotels. Over 2,000 delegates from 70 member nations will be on hand to participate in the week-long activities that are planned for the largest cartographic exposition in the world. The huge map exhibition that will be open to the public and the exposition trade fair will feature the latest in cartographic products and services from government and industry. This will be a forum for leading authorities from around the globe to present papers and conduct comprehensive workshops on a wide array of scientific and technical subjects. Associated with that meeting, thanks to the invitation of Alberta Wood, will be a called meeting of the Congress of Cartographic Information Specialists Associations, with a panel discussion focusing on the future of map librarianship, and a CCISA representatives meeting, zeroing in on the panel discussion and issuing a position paper on critical issues. Hopefully that position paper will be a useful tool for your use with your administrations, with your professional association, with fellow cartographic professionals -- as we all look to the future. I especially urge each of the constituent members of the Congress of Cartographic Information Specialist Associations, or CCISA, [ACSM, ALA-MAGERT, SLA G&M, WAML, NACIS, ACMLA, ISCEM, COSML, U.S.L.C.G.&M., National Archives, Canada, National Archives U.S., NEMO] to send representatives to this meeting, and to facilitate attendance of representives by providing monetary support. Due to the cost factors, it is critical that each organization move quickly to select representatives, encourage their membership in ACMLA, and focus on critical issues we need to discuss in Ottawa. As convenor of the CCISA meeting, I will attempt to direct this email to specific association chairs. One difficulty in all this, is that the leadership of all these groups will probably change before August 1999, so we have to cooperate to bring this meeting to fruition. Contact me at [log in to unmask] if you have questions on CCISA/Ottawa. In order not to waste the time of non-interested parties, please respond to me directly and not to maps-l. The ICA conference is not inexpensive. ACMLA, however, and several other participating organizations have been able to negotiate a discount registration for their members which is half of the normal registration cost, at $325Canadian. This gives access to the entire technical program [4.5 full days], cartographic and technical exhibits and a number of tours. Social events are not included in this discounted fee. This will be a unique opportunity to participate in an international conference and meet your colleagues from around the world. To save costs, campus housing is being arranged by ACMLA, and most of the Canadian map librarians will stay there. Most of the corporate and governmental ICA types will be in the Ottaw hotels. Early ICA conference registration will be in April 1999. To insure the cost saving on ICA registration, please consider joining ACMLA. To be considered a current member you must join by September 15, 1998. ACMLA membership will save you 50% on some fees, most especially registration, for the ICA conference. Information on ACMLA membership is available from Bruce Weedmark at [log in to unmask] If you are interested in attending this very exciting conference, please note the following: Associate ACMLA membership for U.S. citizens is $35Canadian. Send a check, with the word Canadian written in front of the word dollars on your check, along with your name, position, affiliation, address, telephone, fax and email address to: ACMLA, C/o Visual and Sound Archives Division, National Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1A ON3.
