2 messages below ----------------------------------------------------- Message 1 Mary Larsgaard's book, Map librarianship: an introduction, 2nd ed, 1987, Libraries Unlimited, is an excellent answer to your first query. It is due out in a new edition, but I have not yet seen an announcement on this list that it is out. In answer to the other query, I will take it in the spirit you meant, because cataloging is NOT for dummies, as anyone who has tried to teach it to someone else can attest! There is the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division's Map cataloging manual, 1991-, which is easy to use despite its length. Another is Cartographic materials: a manual of interpretation for AACR2, ALA, 1982. This has some usefulness despite the fact that a revised edition of AACR2 has come out since this book was published. The OCLC Inputting Standards coupled with the LC Map cataloging manual represent my 'bible' and commentary that I rely upon for most of my work. Finally, there are some good, really good, map catalogers in OCLC land, especially at LC and the New York Public Library. Others as well whose OCLC symbols I do not recognize are doing fine work. Many of the records you see in OCLC are good examples of how to do it. _________________________________________ Ken Grabach <[log in to unmask]> Documents and Maps Librarian Miami University Libraries Oxford, Ohio 45056 USA > --- Begin Forwarded Message --- > Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 08:37:38 -0500 > From: Murway Mark <[log in to unmask]> > Subject: Book recommendations > Sender: Murway Mark <[log in to unmask]> > > Ahoy! > > Is there a basic, introductory book about map librarianship? > > Also, is there a Cataloging for Dummies book? > > Thanks, > Mark Murway > [log in to unmask] > --- End Forwarded Message --- > ------------------------------------------------------------------- Message 2 I believe that many people will suggest the following in response to your first question: Map librarianship : an introduction / Mary Lynette Larsgaard. -- 3rd ed. -- Englewood, Colo. : Libraries Unlimited, 1998.
