SCHOLARSHIPS

ISEP
Students who are interested in studying through ISEP in FRANCE or
GERMANY for the academic year are eligible to apply for a $3000 grant
for study at an ISEP member institution in France or Germany. In
addition, the Board of Regents is also offering an ISEP study abroad
grant of $500 in addition to other new BOR funding programs for study
abroad.

Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University
The deadline for the Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University
scholarship and travel grant applications for fall semester is Tuesday,
April 1.  You can download the application from
www.ifsa-butler.org/forms/index.html or can call 800.858.0229 to request

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is now accepting
applications for fall 2003/academic year 2003-2004 cycle of the Benjamin
A. Gilman International Scholarship.  This program provides awards of up
to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year
institutions to pursue country-based semester or academic-year long
study abroad opportunities.  To be eligible, students must be receiving
a Federal Pell Grant.  For more information, full eligibility criteria,
and the online application, visit the Gilman Program website at

STORIES NEEDED

Europe from a Backpack is now accepting submissions from students who
have studied abroad or backpacked in Europe. Europe from a Backpack is
accepting real stories revolving around the cultural, social, and
life-shaping experiences in this form: 250 to 5,000 words in 1st person
narrative.  All submissions are due June 1.  Submissions accepted for
publication will be compensated.  Please contact Mark Pearson at

SCOG

The Student Council on Globalization will be meeting Thursday, March
13th at 5:15 in Barrow Hall Room 215B.  A guest speaker will be leading
a discussion about the relationship between China and Taiwan.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed to showcase traditional clothing that represents
their respective countries for the International Street Festival fashion
show.  The fashion show will take place Saturday, April 5th at 12:00.

PROGRAMS

The International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) is still making
placements in Korea.  Programs in Asian and Korean Studies, Business,
Political Science, et al are possible. There are also opportunities to
study at the graduate level in business and political science through
Yonsei University and Korea University.  ISEP will be placing student

CULTURAL EVENTS

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the U.S.-Japan relationship.
In this context, there are many Japan-related cultural events happening
in and around the city of Atlanta in March. Below, please find a list of
events of interest.

12th Annual Japanese Speech Contest, 6th Annual Regional Japan BowlTM,
and Tea Ceremony.
March 15, Oglethorpe University.
Japanese Speech Contest: Co-organized by the Consulate General of
Japan and the Japan-America Society of Georgia. University students
studying Japanese will make speeches on various Japan-related topics.
Registration begins at 1:00 pm and is open to the public.
Japan BowlTM: Organized by the Japan-America Society of Georgia. High
school students studying Japanese will attempt to answer questions
related to Japan's language and culture. The actual competition is not
open to the public.
Tea ceremony will also be performed from 4:30-5:00 for the enjoyment of
participants and spectators.

Performance of Genji Monogatari by Hori Hiroshi Puppet Theater
March 18, 8:00 pm, Center for Puppetry Arts.
Co-organized by the Consulate General of Japan, the Japan Foundation,
and the Center for Puppetry Arts. This evocative adaptation of the
world's first novel, The Tale of Genji, will feature lecture, dance,
film and puppetry as the Hori Hiroshi Company brings handmade puppets to
life. (Not recommended for children)

Japanese Film Festival
March 20, 7:30 pm, 205 White Hall, Emory University
Co-organized by the Consulate General of Japan and Emory University
Showing: Yari no Gonza ("Spear of Gonza") This adaptation of a puppet
play by Chikamatsu tells the story of a handsome samurai who faces
tribulations. (Not recommended for children)
