Upcoming Events

The International Education Week Celebration, including an
international feast, entertainment, silent auction, and
photo contest awards presentation, will be held November
17th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student
Center.  Tickets are $5 for UGA students (with a valid UGA
ID), $8 for non-UGA students, $3 for children 6-12, and free
for children under 6.  Tickets will be available at the Tate
Center Box Office beginning Oct. 24th or at the door the
night of the event.  OIE will also be holding a drawing for
a handful of tickets.  To enter, stop by 209 Barrow Hall,
beginning Oct. 27th, to fill out an entry form.  Entry forms
must be completed by Nov. 7th.  Winners will be notified on
Nov. 10th.

The Office of International Education is sponsoring a
photography contest for international students and U.S.
students who have studied or traveled abroad.  Students may
submit up to three photos to 209 Barrow Hall (across from
the Science Library) by November 3rd.  Photos will be judged
in two categories: People & Culture and Artistic Merit.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category.  For

WANTED: Undergraduate Student Representative to the UGA
Study Abroad Risk Management Review Board

Are you a returned study abroad/exchange student looking to
get more involved?? Applications are now available from the
Office of International Education for the Undergraduate
Student Representative to the UGA Study Abroad Risk
Management Review Board position.
The appointment of the undergraduate representative to the
Risk Management Review Board is typically for one academic
year -- August to May. However, our current student rep will
be graduating and we need a replacement to begin in December
and continue through all of next year. This term may be
renewed for additional years of service. The Risk Management
Review Board meets approximately four times during the
academic year, currently on Fridays from 9am-11am.
The undergraduate student representative provides other
members of the Board with a student’s perspective on the
issues under consideration by the Board.  This position
gives the student an excellent opportunity to broaden
his/her experiences and learn from direct participation how
decisions are made that affect the university. The student
representative may also be called upon to serve on other
committees relating to international education. The
undergraduate student representative is a voting member of
the UGA Study Abroad Risk Management Review Board.

Just a reminder that the Institute for Study Abroad, Butler
University scholarship deadline for spring semester and year
programs in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Chile is
November 1, 2003.  For more information, please visit

The School for Field Studies is extending the deadline to
apply for the new Andreas Family Foundation Scholarship.
The original deadline for spring semester was October 15th.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young
Professionals

CDS International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
developing and enhancing opportunities for Americans to
participate in meaningful, practical training opportunities
abroad.  The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young
Professionals is a one-year study/internship exchange
program is designed to strengthen ties between the younger
generations of the United States and Germany. Primarily a
cultural exchange, it combines language study, professional
schooling and an internship-providing a firsthand experience
of many aspects of German life.  The program is meant for
candidates pursuing business, technical, agricultural or
vocational careers, although candidates from all fields area
encouraged to apply. The exchange begins each year in late-
July and ends in mid-July of the next year.  The application
deadline is December 1 for the next program year.  For more

Announcements from ISL

Friday, October 24, 2003.  International Coffee Hour.  Join
the Taiwan Student Association as they host this week's
Coffee Hour. Explore the beautiful country of Taiwan and
enjoy the culture.  Free cultural, food and drinks.  Coffee
provided by Jittery Joe's Coffee Roasting Company.  11:30
am - 12:30 pm in the Memorial Hall Ballroom. For more

Thursday, October 23, 2003.  Tea Talk.  UGA student Anjali
Philipose will discuss cultural identity in the immigrant
student community.  Where is home?  How to reconcile your
family's cultural background with American cultural value
that you grew up in?  6 pm - 7 pm ISL Lounge (210 Memorial

The 2nd Annual UGA World Cup Soccer Tournament sponsored by
ISL and the UGA Student Government Association will be held
on Sunday, Oct 26th, 2003, from 10 am - 5 pm.   Pick up your
application to make your World Cup team at the Tate Info
Desk - the winning team will be rewarded, and the top two
teams (no matter who wins) will compete in a rematch during
International Education Week!  A flyer for the event can be
