This week on the SISA (Students Interested in Study Abroad)
Listserv you will find some useful information for those who
are planning to go abroad, those who are currently abroad,
and those who have returned!

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

ELIZABETH SUZANNE SCHAEFER STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

UPCOMING DEADLINE: 0CTOBER 15. 2004

The Office of International Education is pleased to announce
the application deadline for the Elizabeth Suzanne Schaefer
Scholarship in support of UGA students who will study abroad
in Spring 2005 or Summer 2005.

--Award: $500 scholarships provided through support of the
Schaefer-Sammons family and the UGA Foundation.
--Eligibilty: UGA undergraduates attending a UGA study
abroad or exchange program or an external study abroad (not
sponsored by UGA). 3.0 minimum GPA required. Preference
will be given for academic merit, applicants from groups
that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. students of
color, first generation college students, students from
rural Georgia, math/science majors), participation in
programs with language/cultural immersion component or
located in a under-represented geographic regions (i.e.
outside of Western Europe).
--To Apply: Download an Office of International Education
scholarship application from the OIE website at
http://www.uga.edu/oie/sagensch.htm and submit complete
application to the Office of International Education.
Additional study abroad scholarships are also available
using this application form.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK CELEBRATION

The Office of International Education and the Office of
International Student Life will host its 2nd Annual
International Education Week Celebration.  This event will
take place on November 15, 2004 from 6:00-9:00 pm in Tate
Student Center, Georgia Hall.

To make this event successful at UGA, we need your help!
Three important parts of our celebration are the
International Feast, the Silent Auction, and the Photo
Contest…and you can help with these areas.

PHOTO CONTEST

Cash Prizes will be awarded at  the event: 1st Prize
winners: $75; 2nd Prize winners: $50 ; 3rd Prize winners: $25

RULES
• The contest is open to all UGA students who have lived,
studied or traveled outside the United States.
International students and returning study abroad students
are encouraged to apply.
• Students must submit photos from an experience outside the
United States.
• Students  may enter up to 3 photos.  Photos may be between
3 X 5 and 5 X 7.
• Photos will be judged in two categories: People & Culture
should communicate a cross-cultural experience and Artistic
Merit should reflect artistic quality (may include people
and landscape).
• A People’s Choice award will be voted on during this
event.
• Students should submit photos in an envelope addressed to
Ashley Goodrich, Photo Contest, Office of International
Education, 209 Barrow Hall along with a form that is
available at 209 Barrow Hall or can be downloaded from the
OIE website: http://www.uga.edu/oie/iew/photo.htm
• DEADLINE FOR ENTRY:  Nov. 1, 2004. at 5:00 PM

FOOD
• You can bring an international dish that feeds at least 8
people to the celebration.  If you choose to bring food, you
will receive $2 off your admission price.

SILENT AUCTION
• We need items from different countries to sell at our
silent auction.  We can accept all types of items, new or
used, from around the world that you would like to donate.
Examples would be traditional dress, cultural artifacts, or
any other trinkets from another country.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE EVENT WILL SUPPORT STUDY ABROAD AND
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS!!!

*Tickets for the International Education Week Celebration
will become available for purchase at the Tate Center Box
Office.  Prices are as follows: UGA Students, $5; Non-
students, $8; Children 6-12, $3; Children under 6, free.

Ghana Service-Learning Study Abroad Lecture will be held
from 3:00-5:00 in room 302 in the SLC.  Experience a vivid
visual lecture by Lindsey Mann, Alex Nagel, Ian Scott, David
Elden and Prof. Pratt Cassity with special guest Mr. Frank
Busumtwi, Director of Town and Country Planning, Cape Coast,
Ghana.

Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Seminar -
Political Violence and Teaching About the Past in Latin
America: Guatemala's Memory of Silence and the Limits of

THIS WEEK'S UGA-EXCHANGE PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Here’s a great opportunity to study abroad for a semester or
year in Brighton, England at the University of Sussex.  UGA
students enroll in classes with local Sussex students and
live in campus residence halls.  Subjects Offered:  a wide
variety of university subjects in Arts, Business,
Engineering Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, etc.
