1. The Pakistani Students Association at UGA needs your help. Monday
through Wednesday of this week, we will be at Tate between 11 am and 2 pm.
Please consider bringing back items for the drive for South Asia. We're
focusing on blankets and clothing. We are also collecting cash and check
donations which will go directly to relief efforts in South Asia. If you
would like to donate anything and are unable attend the drive at Tate,

with you. Every little bit counts. Even if it's the change in you pocket,
or the money you were going to spend on a frappuccino.
It has been one week since the earthquake in South Asia. It is no longer on
the front page of the paper, but please do not bury this tragedy in the back
of your mind. In Pakistan, the death toll is near 40,000. Please do not
look at this as just a number. These were people. Mothers, fathers,
siblings, best friends, coworkers, neighbors, and students, just like us.
One of the thousands of buildings that collapsed was a university in
Kashmir. The students there are not different from us. They were sitting
in their lecture halls with iPods in their backpacks and cell phones on
silent when their lives ended. THOUSANDS of children died. Everyone was in
school at the time of the quake. Hundreds of school just collapsed.
Imagine if that happened to the school that your little brother or sister
attends. 1,000 hospitals were destroyed. That doesn't even count the
hospitals that were damaged. They were destroyed. The media kept saying
that there were many villages that were destroyed. This is a serious
understatement. Many of these 'villages' were small towns and cities
similar to Athens. They had schools, shopping strips, offices, gyms,
hospitals, restaurants, and homes.

2. Inter-Faith Panel on Death Penalty Abolition,Tuesday, October 18th from
6:30-8:30pm in the North PJ
Auditorium, representatives of different faiths will come together to talk
about how each of their religions supports

3. The 3rd Annual Ramadan Fast-a-Thon hosted by the UGA Muslim Student will
be Thursday, October 20, 2005. Duing the Islamic month of Ramadan, Muslims
fast during the daylight hours as an act of submission, solidarity and
remembrance. One of the main reasons for fasting is to call attention to
those who go hungry every day, not as an exercise of religious expression,
but as a fact of life. A grassroots movement, our local Fast-a-thon
participation has grown from just over 350 to nearly 500 in the past two
years.
This Ramadan, Muslim students at UGA will be sharing their fasting
experience and the consciousness it raises with their non-Muslim peers. For
each student that participates we're asking local businesses to donate at
least $1 to help the victims of the recent Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. At
the conclusion of the fast, participating students will be invited to break
fast and share a meal prepared by the MSA and the local Muslim community.
Last year, about 130 MSAs across the U.S. and Canada hosted Fast-a-Thons on
their campuses, collecting over $46,000 to support local soup kitchens and
emergency food shelters. We hope that in its 3rd year, the Fast-a-thon can
bring together people of different races and religions to abstain from
eating for a greater cause, to help raise money to feed those less
fortunate, showing unity and collaboration among all those who participate.

4. We're Back! This week's coffee Hour hosted by the Campus Connection will
be in the newly renovated Memorial Hall Ballroom. Come enjoy free food,
lemonade, coffee and fun! Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, 11:30 - 1:30 pm.
5. Join ISL as we send a delegation of UGA students to the 7th annual
Georgia International Leadership Conference. Deadline to apply is
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2005 at 4:59 pm at ISL! The Georgia International
Leadership Conference is a conference designed for student leaders from
across Georgia. The ~200 participants will include both international
students and U.S. study abroad students currently enrolled at Georgia
colleges and universities. The conference schedule includes ice-breakers,
leadership training,cross-cultural communication, social events, and much
more!
The cost of the conference is $50 for everything (including meals) and the
dates are February 24-26, 2006! ISL will provide transportation free of
charge for the UGA delegation to take us to Rock Eagle in Eatonton, GA.
If you ATTEND the conference and have paid your student activity fees, you
may be eligible for a FULL refund of the $50 conference fee after you
return!

regular business hours. Registration is not complete until students turn in

fees may be eligible for a FULL refund of the $50 conference fee after you

6. Athens for Justice in Palestine: Tue Oct 25 @ 8:00pm in SLC Rm #171
Special Guest Speaker: Michael Tarazi
Michael Tarazi is a lawyer with the Palestinian Liberation Organization who
provides legal advice to the Negotiations Affairs Department on a wide array
of issues. He is an American born Palestinian Christian who obtained his
education from Harvard Law School and he has made recent appearances on CNN,
ABC, NBC, and BBC and Mr.Tarazi has also been published in the New York
Times. This is a rare opportunity to be able and ask questions to a
Palestinian negotiator who splits his time between Ramallah and New York.

1. Open Mic with Mike set for Oct. 19. University of Georgia President
Michael F. Adams will host an "Open Mic with Mike" forum at Oct. 19 in
Studio One of the Journalism Building. Doors will close promptly at 5:55
p.m., but all other locations listed below are open for drop-ins. The
broadcast will air live on channel 15 at 6 p.m. Adams will be fielding
questions directly from Studio One in the basement of the Grady College of
Journalism. Students may also ask questions directly to Adams through
satellite locations throughout campus. Those locations are the Red and Black
newspaper office across from Brumby Hall on Baxter Street,Tate Plaza and the
East Campus Fireside Lounge. Students may also email questions before or
during the show beginning Oct.15. The e-mail address is [log in to unmask]
The forum is an opportunity for students to discuss university-related
issues with President Adams. The event is open to the public, and the news
media are invited to attend. However, only UGA students may participate in
the discussion.
This event is held in conjunction with telecommunications students in the
Grady College and the Student Government Association.
