1. 24th ANNUAL STUDY, WORK, AND TRAVEL ABROAD FAIR

Mark your calendar for the 24th Annual Study, Work, and Travel Abroad Fair to be held on Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 16, 2008, 10 am - 3 pm, Student Learning Center, SLC Rotunda, 4th Floor.

Plan to come BOTH DAYS, as the hall will be filled with different study abroad programs each day, to learn more information about exciting upcoming opportunities to go abroad!  The Fair will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day and is a "drop-in" event!  We will look forward to seeing you both days!

2. UNIQUE GLOBAL CLASS OFFERED ON UGA’S CAMPUS IN SPRING 2009:

Interested in global issues and agricultural development? Join the global seminar next spring…an international course that uses videoconferencing technology to link students from all over the globe. Work with students from campuses in Austria, Florida, Japan, Minnesota, Virginia, and Italy to tackle controversial issues from organic agriculture and GMO’s to global responsibility.

This course (ALDR 4600/6600) will run in the spring semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 am. Of particular interest to students before or after completing their own study abroad program! This course is not only for agriculture majors… students from political science, international affairs, public health, and many other fields are encouraged to participate.

7. THE BIG READ, SEPTEMBER 18, 2008
The Big Read Hispanic Film Series. Sponsored by the UGA Libraries. Two films to be shown. From Curandera to Chupacabra: The Stories of Rudolfo Anaya (26 minutes) is a documentary about Rudolfo Anaya and thecreative process, and Curandero (27 mins.) is about the role healers have in traditional cultures, and was a 1975 Peabody Awards entry. A funny and moving ensemble play that challenges a group of four diverse Latina women to examine their identity and their connections in the contemporary American landscape. FOR STUDNETS GOING ABROAD THIS FALL:

10. ABSENTEE BALLOTS: VOTING FROM OVERSEAS THIS FALL!

You’re still not too late to arrange for your vote this fall! On November 4, 2008, citizens of the United States of America will cast votes for one third of the Senate, all members of the House of Representatives and a new President. If you will be abroad on election day, take steps NOW so you can be a part of the elections!

Citizens who will be living outside the United States must take a few steps to ensure that they receive an absentee ballot. For those living overseas, even temporarily, there is a federal form called the Federal Postcard Application (FPCA) that is used to request an absentee ballot.
To register to vote and/or apply for an absentee ballot, you can use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) at http://www.fvap.gov/resources/media/fpca.pdf.  The standard FPCA can be obtained from any U.S. embassy or consulate or many American civic groups.  The on-line version, the OFPCA, is accepted by all states and territories.  The on-line OFPCA form must be completed legibly, printed, signed, dated, and mailed to your local election officials. Your state may allow faxing to speed the process, but you will still need to send in the original by mail.  Use an envelope and affix proper postage.

The official U.S. Government web site for overseas absentee voting assistance, http://www.fvap.gov, has a wealth of information about absentee voting, including the state-specific instructions for completing the FPCA form, links to state and local officials, and a downloadable emergency ballot for use by those who register in time but fail to receive an official ballot.

As a general rule, you should try to send in the FPCA so that it reaches your local election officials at least forty-five days before the first election in which you are eligible to vote — ample time for them to process the request and send you a blank ballot.  If applying for both registration and an absentee ballot, you may want to mail the FPCA earlier.
Under normal circumstances, most states and territories begin sending ballots to overseas citizens 30-45 days before an election. This varies…in Georgia, for example, you have to register to vote by 10/06/08 and request your ballot by 10/31/2008.

11. REGISTER ON-LINE WITH US EMBASSY OVERSEAS:

The Office of International Education recommends that all current study abroad students register with the local US Embassy in your host country. Students may easily register on-line via the US State Department website:
https://travelregistration.state.gov

Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an emergency, and to receive regular safety/security updates issued for residents in your host country while abroad. Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Please do take the responsibility to register your stay abroad with the US State Department while on your study abroad program.

12. OPTIONS ABROAD SESSION
If you are interested in studying, working, volunteering or interning abroad, we encourage you to attend an Options Abroad Session.

In these 50-minute information sessions, we explain the basics of finding a study abroad program, using the resources in our study abroad library, the process of transferring credit from an external study abroad program, financial aid and scholarships for study abroad, health and insurance, basic travel information, information on working, volunteering, or interning abroad, and SISA, the study abroad listserv.

The sessions are held three times a week in 303 Bank of America Building, 110 E. Clayton St., during the fall and spring semesters at the following times:
Monday 3:35-4:25 p.m.
Tuesday 3:30-4:20 p.m.
Thursday 2:00-2:50 p.m.

UGA Costa Rica is holding an information session for students interested in going on one of our 2009 programs! This will be held FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, from 12:00-1:00pm in the Study Abroad Office downtown (Bank of America Building, 3rd floor). --SECAC GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP TO NORTHERN IRELAND
SPRING 2009 SEMESTER

This is a joint project of the member schools of SECAC (SEC Academic Consortium) and sponsored by IFSA-Butler Foundation.

-Scholarship Award:  $ 8,500 To be subtracted from IFSA program cost; HOPE and/or additional financial aid may also apply; all majors considered.

--One UGA student will be selected to enroll for a full semester of credit at Queen's University, Northern Ireland through the ISFA-Butler study abroad program AND engage in a community service project in Belfast during 2009 Spring semester with other SEC scholarship recipients.
Academic record, financial need and demonstrated leadership potential will be factors in the selection.

-- UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION STUDY ABROAD FELLOWSHIP

Up to $3000 study abroad fellowship awarded for selected UGA undergraduates attending a UGA-sponsored study abroad or exchange program for one semester (Fall or Spring) or full academic year. The Alumni Association Study Abroad Fellowship funds are raised through the UGA Alumni Association and matched by the UGA Foundation Office of International Affairs International Programs Fund.

- Eligibility Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA. Must not have previously studied abroad for academic credit at the university level. Award based on academic merit, demonstrated financial need, strong faculty recommendation, essay, and overall application. Fellowship recipient must be willing to meet with the Alumni Board (at a mutually convenient regularly scheduled meeting either before departure or within six months of completing study abroad program) and to correspond with designated Alumni Board staff and volunteers. Students must have completed at least one full semester at UGA prior to application and have at least one semester to complete at UGA upon return. (i.e. fellowship cannot be used for the last semester of your degree program in order to participate in post-study abroad campus activities proposed in application essay).

-- BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS

The Association of Teachers of Japanese is an international, non-profit, non-political organization of scholars, teachers, and students of Japanese language, literature, and linguistics dedicated to teaching and scholarship and to the exchange of information among teachers and other professionals to help broaden and deepen knowledge and appreciation of Japan and its culture. The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.

- Eligibility: Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.

--BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

Spring 2009 Application Website Now Open - Online deadline: Tuesday, October 7, 2008 (11:59 PM Central Standard Time)

--Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000.  The Gilman International Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.

--Eligibility: Applicants must be studying abroad in the fall, spring or academic year terms.  Summer only programs are not eligible. For undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at the time of application; cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a US Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.

--Additional Awards for Critical Language Study:  Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements were offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2007-2008 academic year. There will be an increased number of Supplements this academic year. Critical Need Languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic languages, Persian, Indic languages, Korean, Russian

-- FREEMAN AWARDS FOR STUDY IN ASIA

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. In the past, there have been few funding opportunities for study abroad in Asia. However, with the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Institute of International Education (IIE) now administers the Freeman-ASIA Awards in order to give more American undergraduate students the means to study in East and Southeast Asia.

Spring 2009 & Early Academic Year 2009-10 Awards-For students applying to study abroad programs of 10 weeks or more with program start date between December-April.

-- ARCADIA SCHOLARSHIPS:

The Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad has one of the most extensive scholarship programs of any study abroad organization. It provides more than $2 million per year in financial aid and scholarships. Annually, the center distributes hundreds of need-based scholarships ranging between $500 and $2,000 for a full year, semester, term, or summer.

-Who qualifies? Generally, our scholarship funds are intended to help students in specific programs for whom a small amount of financial aid can mean the difference between participation and staying home. Award decisions are based upon a combination of financial need and academic merit. Please note that scholarships can only be applied towards the program fee. In order to apply for a Center for Education Abroad scholarship, you must have applied for financial aid through your home school.

- How can I apply? Scholarship applications and supporting materials will be accepted between February 1 and April 20 for fall and full-year programs, between September 1 and October 15 for spring programs, and between January 1 and March 31 for summer programs. The center notifies award applicants of decisions approximately four weeks after the application deadline for the student's chosen period of study.

16. ATTENTION PEER ADVISORS FOR STUDY ABROAD AT UGA AND THOSE INTERESTED IN PEER ADVISING…

Do you still want to talk about your study abroad experience? Need an interested audience for your study abroad stories and memories? Want to encourage other UGA students to study abroad?

The Office of International Education is looking for peer advisors for the 2008-2009 academic year. We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels. You can choose to participate in as many events as your schedule permits.

If you are interested in becoming a Study Abroad Peer Advisor, and you have not done so already, please contact Amanda Work at the Office of International Education, [log in to unmask] or 425-3274.
