1. VOLUNTEER AT THE 24th ANNUAL STUDY, WORK, AND TRAVEL ABROAD FAIR

The 24th Annual Study, Work, and Travel Abroad Fair will be held on Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 16, 2008, 10 am - 3 pm, Student Learning Center, SLC Rotunda, 4th Floor.

We invite you to help us make this fair a success as a volunteer! Volunteers are needed for all parts of the day, including set-up, break-down, and in-fair activities. Help is needed from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm, for any portion that you are available. Donate an hour of your time, or two, or more!

If you want to sign up as a volunteer, contact Lila Grisar at [log in to unmask] Mention which day and which hour slots you can come join us between 7 am and 5 pm at the SLC for this fun UGA event!

And don’t forget, even if you can’t volunteer…do plan to come as a visitor BOTH DAYS, as the hall will be filled with different study abroad programs each day, to learn more information about exciting upcoming opportunities to go abroad!  The Fair will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day and is a "drop-in" event!  We will look forward to seeing you both days!

2. ANNOUNCING THE 2008 ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL PHOTO CONTEST: THE WORLD IN PICTURES

The Office of International Education wants you to get ready for this year’s international photo competition! Stay tuned for more information in the coming week about submissions and deadlines.

The contest is open to all UGA students who have traveled outside the United States and all international students who are currently studying at UGA. The contest puts the spotlight on talented young student photographers while bringing bit of the world home to the UGA community through pictures. Last year’s competition had more than 300 entries!

3. 2ND ANNUAL GLOBAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, OCTOBER 2008

The International Student Life Office would like to announce their 2nd Annual Global Leadership Institute, a series of internationally-focused seminars that enable UGA students to enhance global competencies that inform cultural awareness, promote cross-cultural appreciation and advance engagement in the global community. All currently enrolled UGA students who are interested in gaining international experience and learning more about the world are cordially invited. Students will participate in interactive workshops that teach foundational information concerning global leadership and cross cultural competencies, lead by the Institute's engaging faculty. To culminate the Institute, certificates are awarded to students who attend three of four seminars.

7. OPTIONS ABROAD SESSION

If you are interested in studying, working, volunteering or interning abroad, we encourage you to attend an Options Abroad Session.

In these 50-minute information sessions, we explain the basics of finding a study abroad program, using the resources in our study abroad library, the process of transferring credit from an external study abroad program, financial aid and scholarships for study abroad, health and insurance, basic travel information, information on working, volunteering, or interning abroad, and SISA, the study abroad listserv.

The sessions are held three times a week in 303 Bank of America Building, 110 E. Clayton St., during the fall and spring semesters at the following times:
Monday 3:35-4:25 p.m.
Tuesday 3:30-4:20 p.m.
Thursday 2:00-2:50 p.m.

-- UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION STUDY ABROAD FELLOWSHIP

Up to $3000 study abroad fellowship awarded for selected UGA undergraduates attending a UGA-sponsored study abroad or exchange program for one semester (Fall or Spring) or full academic year. The Alumni Association Study Abroad Fellowship funds are raised through the UGA Alumni Association and matched by the UGA Foundation Office of International Affairs International Programs Fund.

- Eligibility Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA. Must not have previously studied abroad for academic credit at the university level. Award based on academic merit, demonstrated financial need, strong faculty recommendation, essay, and overall application. Fellowship recipient must be willing to meet with the Alumni Board (at a mutually convenient regularly scheduled meeting either before departure or within six months of completing study abroad program) and to correspond with designated Alumni Board staff and volunteers. Students must have completed at least one full semester at UGA prior to application and have at least one semester to complete at UGA upon return. (i.e. fellowship cannot be used for the last semester of your degree program in order to participate in post-study abroad campus activities proposed in application essay).

-- BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS

The Association of Teachers of Japanese is an international, non-profit, non-political organization of scholars, teachers, and students of Japanese language, literature, and linguistics dedicated to teaching and scholarship and to the exchange of information among teachers and other professionals to help broaden and deepen knowledge and appreciation of Japan and its culture. The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.

- Eligibility: Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.

--BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

Spring 2009 Application Website Now Open - Online deadline: Tuesday, October 7, 2008 (11:59 PM Central Standard Time)

--Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000.  The Gilman International Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.

--Eligibility: Applicants must be studying abroad in the fall, spring or academic year terms.  Summer only programs are not eligible. For undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at the time of application; cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a US Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.

--Additional Awards for Critical Language Study:  Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements were offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2007-2008 academic year. There will be an increased number of Supplements this academic year. Critical Need Languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic languages, Persian, Indic languages, Korean, Russian

-- SECAC GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP TO NORTHERN IRELAND, SPRING 2009 SEMESTER (EXTENDED DEADLINE THROUGH OCTOBER 10!)
Scholarship Award:  $8,500 to be subtracted from IFSA program cost; HOPE and/or additional financial aid may also apply; all majors considered.

-One UGA student will be selected to enroll for a full semester of credit at Queen's University, Northern Ireland through the ISFA-Butler study abroad program AND engage in a community service project in Belfast during 2009 Spring semester with other SEC scholarship recipients. Academic record, financial need and demonstrated leadership potential will be factors in the selection.

-- FREEMAN AWARDS FOR STUDY IN ASIA

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. In the past, there have been few funding opportunities for study abroad in Asia. However, with the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Institute of International Education (IIE) now administers the Freeman-ASIA Awards in order to give more American undergraduate students the means to study in East and Southeast Asia.

Spring 2009 & Early Academic Year 2009-10 Awards-For students applying to study abroad programs of 10 weeks or more with program start date between December-April.

-- ARCADIA SCHOLARSHIPS:

The Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad has one of the most extensive scholarship programs of any study abroad organization. It provides more than $2 million per year in financial aid and scholarships. Annually, the center distributes hundreds of need-based scholarships ranging between $500 and $2,000 for a full year, semester, term, or summer.

-Who qualifies? Generally, our scholarship funds are intended to help students in specific programs for whom a small amount of financial aid can mean the difference between participation and staying home. Award decisions are based upon a combination of financial need and academic merit. Please note that scholarships can only be applied towards the program fee. In order to apply for a Center for Education Abroad scholarship, you must have applied for financial aid through your home school.

- How can I apply? Scholarship applications and supporting materials will be accepted between February 1 and April 20 for fall and full-year programs, between September 1 and October 15 for spring programs, and between January 1 and March 31 for summer programs. The center notifies award applicants of decisions approximately four weeks after the application deadline for the student's chosen period of study.

GRADUATE STUDENTS 2009 INTERNATIONAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION (DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 5, 2008)

The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) Program supports
distinguished graduate students in the humanities and social sciences
conducting dissertation research outside the United States. The IDRF Program is administered by the Social Science Research Council in consultation with the American Council of Learned Societies and funding provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The IDRF is committed to empirical and site-specific research that advances
knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies (involving fieldwork, research
in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection). The
program promotes research that is situated in a specific discipline and
geographical region and is engaged with interdisciplinary and cross-regional
perspectives.

Eligibility
The program is open to full-time graduate students in the humanities and
social sciences—regardless of citizenship—enrolled in doctoral programs in the
United States. Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. requirements except
on-site dissertation research by the time the fellowship begins or by December
2009, whichever comes first.

Terms of Support
Fellowships will provide support for nine to twelve months of dissertation
research. Seventy-five fellowships of approximately $20,000 will be awarded in
2009. The fellowship must be held for a single continuous period within the
eighteen months between July 2009 and December 2010.

12. ATTENTION PEER ADVISORS FOR STUDY ABROAD


Please see the general announcement #1 in this message about volunteering for the Study Abroad Fair. Peer advisors are also needed to work a table throughout fair hours and to be available for questions from prospective study abroad participants.

Also, as you may know. This year’s peer advisors are in the process of going through orientation to launch into a year of activities. It’s not too late to get involved. The Office of Study Abroad has planned two orientation meetings for those interested in becoming Peer Advisors. Prospective Peer Advisors are asked to come to one of these meetings, which will be held Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, September 30th and October 1st.

If you have traveled abroad and would like to learn more about our peer advisor program, please contact Amanda Work at [log in to unmask] or 706-425-3274.

We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels. You can choose to participate in as many events as your schedule permits.
