Hello everyone--

On behalf of everyone in the Office of International Education, we wish you a very happy holiday season and safe travels!

This is the last SISA-L announcement (Students Interested in Study Abroad) for 2008! Congratulations to everyone for reaching the end of the Fall 2008 Semester. SISA announcements will resume with classes in the Spring Semester. There are only a few SISA-L announcements below. Two things to take special note of:

- For those of you who are looking ahead for scholarship opportunities, the winter break may be a good time to get familiar with what is available. A sampling of major scholarships is listed below and more can be found through our website: http://www.uga.edu/oie/sa_scholarship.htm

The deadline for submissions to the Mandala Literary Journal, UGA's Multicultural Literary Journal is January 15th, 2009. This year's theme is "bridges." Attached is a flyer with more information.

--DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst…German Academic Exchange Service) (assorted fellowships and scholarships with rolling due dates.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. We offer programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education, providing financial support to over 55,000 individuals per year. We also represent the German higher education system abroad, promote Germany as an academic and research destination, and help build ties between institutions around the world.

-- NSEP DAVID L. BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADUATES AND FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS: DUE 1/11 & 1/29

The Institute of International Education is pleased to announce the opening of the 2009-10 academic year competition for NSEP David L. Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students and NSEP David L. Boren Fellowships for graduate students. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to add important international and language components to their educations.

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for an academic year’s study abroad. Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for language study and international research.

Applications and detailed information on the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available on www.borenawards.org <http://www.borenawards.org/> – our newly designed website.

The application deadline for the Boren Fellowship is January 29, and the deadline for the Boren Scholarship is February 11.

Overseas and EU (non UK) residents are eligible 3-years maintenance and full fees (overseas/EU rate) PhD For a PhD project in any Irish-studies related discipline
Preference may be given to research projects relating to the three interdisciplinary research strands of the initiative, although other high-quality Irish history-related projects will also be considered. The research strands are:

(i) Ireland's Other Capital - Belfast : History, Representation, Reimagining
(ii) Political Conflict, Violence and Human Rights in Ireland
(iii) Irishness in its Wider Setting : European and Global Perspectives

Closing date: 23 January 2009

Applicants should submit an application for admission to Queen's University using the University's online application system at http://pg.apply.qub.ac.uk/home/

They should indicate on this application form their wish to be considered for this competition, and should also inform the relevant Postgraduate Co-ordinator that they are doing so.

The John T. Petters Foundation is a private foundation that works to advance the educational experiences by providing scholarships of deserving students. The Foundation focuses its scholarships to support international business study abroad and social entrepreneurship service programs. The online app for sum/fall 09 study abroad programs will be available Jan 1.

Twice a year deadline in Jan/Feb and Aug/Sept
Summer/Fall
• January 1: Students may begin to submit applications
• February 10: Applications must be submitted using the John T. Petters Foundation web site
• March 20: Finalists are chosen
• April 10: Recipients are chosen
• April/May: Funds are distributed

--GRADUATE STUDENTS: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY IN **GERMANY* *2009-2010*

Applications due January 21, 2009.

UGA Graduate Students have the opportunity to study at several German universities. At Erlangen, Bamberg and Rostock, the scholarships (some are work-study) cover most living expenses. German universities charge no tuition. The academic year runs from October to late July.

Students should be in good standing in their departments and possess sufficient German language skills to undertake course work in German.

The School of History and Anthropology and the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's University Belfast are delighted to announce funding competitions for Masters (MA) and Research (PhD) candidates applying for entry in September 2009. Funding is available for both EU and overseas applicants. We hope this information can be circulated as widely as possible to allow students the opportunity to apply for funding for our programmes.

-- MONBUKAGAKUSHO (MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP-OFFERED BY THE JAPANESE GOV’T MINISTRY OF ED, CULTURE, SPORTS, SCIENCE & TECH. APPS AVAILABLE IN JAN, 2009

The Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho or MEXT) sponsors the Monbukagakusho Scholarship to enable foreign students from 160 countries to study Japanese language and culture at the undergraduate level, to train in methods of teaching Japanese as a foreign language, and to research a broad range of topics at the graduate level in Japanese universities. To date, some 65,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. As of May 1, 2005, there were 9,891 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students.
