May 1, 2009
Greetings from the staff members at International Student Life. We wanted to share a few thoughts with you as we come to the end of the semester.
1. Final Exams:
Best wishes for your final exams coming up next week. We know it is a stressful time for many of you. Study hard, eat healthy and get as much rest as you can.
2. Swine Flu Updates:
As many of you may have heard, the news media and the nation is paying careful attention to the outbreak of swine flu in both Mexico and now the U.S.
ISL encourages you to check news media outlets daily for the most current updates. A quick note that a few cases of swine flu have been found in the southeast at this time.
ISL staff would like to encourage everyone to follow simple health precautions (washing your hands thoroughly and often; covering your mouth when you sneeze; staying at home if you feel sick - unless you are going to see a doctor; etc.).
ISL continues to monitor the situation and again, we encourage each of you to do the same. The following resources are excellent sources of information:
-UGA Health Center (includes tips for keeping healthy)
-UGA Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness
-Center for Disease Control in the US
Additionally, we also understand from colleagues on campus that many governments around the world have been treating individuals landing from the U.S. as a possible risk.
Students traveling over the summer break may need to be prepared to expect extended delays at immigration (and possibly even health questionnaires as well as temperatures being taken) before you are allowed inside the borders.
IF you are traveling, be sure to check the website of the country you are going to for the most updated information. Many embassy websites have information already posted concerning the swine flu outbreak.
Also be aware that if you are sick or have a fever, some countries may quarantine you immediately if you try to enter while you are sick, so try to avoid traveling if you are ill.
3. Questions / Concerns?
Finally, if you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact our office. We are happy to help you find the resources you need.
Take care, be safe, wash your hands, and let us know if you need anything.
Good luck with finals and we wish you well.
