Welcome to this week’s SISA-L, the Students Interested in Study Abroad Listserv.

1.  Ways To Learn About Study Abroad:

- 25th UGA Study, Work, & Travel Abroad Fair
September 30, 2009 & October 1,  10:00 am to 3:00 pm:

25th UGA Study, Work & Travel Abroad Fair. Sponsored by Office of International Education. This annual two-day event is an opportunity for UGA students and faculty to gather useful information about various international education opportunities. Tate Hall, 5th floor of Tate Student Center. - Walk-in Advising with a Study Abroad Representative in Memorial Hall:

Are you interested in studying, working, or volunteering abroad? If so, you can stop by Memorial Hall on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1:30-5:00pm to meet with a study abroad representatives. No appointment is necessary these are walk-in sessions! The study abroad representatives will be in Memorial Hall, Room 233 (in the ICA Department suite). You can also schedule an appointment to meet with a study abroad advisor at their main location downtown at the Bank of America Building.

- Options Abroad Sessions:

In these 50-minute information sessions, a study abroad Advisor in the Office of Study Abroad will explain the basics of finding a study abroad program, using the resources in our study abroad library, the process of transferring credit from an external study abroad program, financial aid and scholarships for study abroad, health and insurance, basic travel information, information on working, volunteering, or interning abroad, and SISA, the study abroad listserv.

The sessions are held three times a week in 303 Bank of America Building, 110 E. Clayton St. Visit our website for more information.

2. SECAC Global Leadership Scholarship to N. Ireland, Spring 2010 Semester- OIE Deadline September 1, 2009

Scholarship Award: $8,500 to be subtracted from IFSA program cost; HOPE and/or additional financial aid may also apply; all majors considered.

-One UGA student will be selected to enroll for a full semester of credit at Queen's University, Northern Ireland through the IFSA-Butler study abroad program AND engage in a community service project in Belfast during 2010 Spring semester with other SEC scholarship recipients. Priority given to first time study abroad student who will have a term remaining at UGA after the study abroad program; however, all are applications welcome.

Academic record, financial need and demonstrated leadership potential will be factors in the selection. This is a joint project of the member schools of SECAC (SEC Academic Consortium) and sponsored by IFSA-Butler Foundation

What Queen's University Belfast has to offer:  A major center of cutting-edge academics and research located in the heart of Belfast • An interesting range of courses in Irish studies • An active Student Union offers everything from concerts to political debates, more than 140 social, cultural and sports clubs.

Housing:  Housing is in the main university housing complex, Queen's Elms, within easy walking distance • Students may live in single or double study-bedrooms that share bathroom, kitchen and living facilities • Students prepare or purchase their own meals.

Academics:  Flexible course selection means students can choose from more than 3,000 courses in 100 subjects; Courses are offered through 21 schools in three faculties: arts, humanities and social sciences; engineering and physical sciences; and medicine, health and life sciences; Many of the university's departments rank among the highest in the U.K. ; Students typically take three courses per semester


3. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program: Deadline Oct 6.

Earn up to $8000 for study abroad (for U.S. citizens who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding, and who will be studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country): Awards are for up to $5000 plus a possible additional Award for Critical Language Study. Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are eligible for an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 50 Critical Need Language Supplements were offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2008-2009 academic year. Critical Need Languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic languages, Persian, Indic languages, Korean, Russian

The Gilman Scholarship Program seeks to diversify the kinds of undergraduates who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Specifically, the Gilman Program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.

Spring 2010 & Summer 2010 Applications (for programs beginning between December 15, 2009 and April 15, 2010): Online applications opened on August 20th. Student Deadline to apply online is October 6th. The Gilman Scholarship Program is piloting a special summer award cycle for students participating in summer 2010 study abroad programs.  To be eligible applicants must meet all of the criteria listed above and must be majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) field.  This pilot cycle for summer 2010 is only open to students in the STEM fields who meet the criteria listed above.

The Fall 2010 application cycle will open in February 2010, with an April 2010 deadline.

The Gilman staff will lead a series of discussions focused on various application topics in a webinar format. Webinars are conferences conducted via the internet, designed to bring live web interaction between presenters and the audience. We will cover the following topics:
•     Walk Through the Application Process: How to Apply (students). August 25, 2009 & September 29, 2009
•     Program Overview: What is the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program?  September 8, 2009
•     Composing a Successful Statement of Purpose & Follow-On Project Essay. August 1, 2009 & September 22, 2009

4.  General OIE Study Abroad Scholarships (Additional Scholarship links are available on the OIE Study Abroad Financial Aid & Scholarship Website at:

- Undergraduate Pre-Vet Majors Study Abroad Fellowship for Spring 2010 or Summer 2010, Courtesy of Merial Corporation. Deadline 9/15

The Office of International Education has one $1000 award in support of in support of a UGA pre-vet major who is planning to study abroad in Spring 2010 or Summer 2010.

Students must be a student in good standing with a pre-vet major and intention to pursue a graduate degree in Veterinary medicine.

Eligibility: Any student who is planning to study abroad in Spring 2010, Summer 2010, Fall 2010, full year 2010-11.

TO APPLY: Download the Pre-vet Fellowship application form on the OIE website and submit full application to the Office of International Education.

- UGA Alumni Association Study Abroad Fellowship, Deadline 10/9.

For UGA undergraduates attending a semester/full-year UGA-sponsored study abroad or exchange program. 3.0 minimum GPA. Have at least 1 semester remaining at UGA after program. Fall and Spring deadlines each year. Awards are up to $3000.


5.  LOOKING FOR SPRING 2010 UGA - EXCHANGE PROGRAM OPTIONS??  Deadline is September 15.

Consider a UGA Exchange Program for Spring 2010 -- Placements are available for the following UGA partner institutions in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Oceania – several are new partner universities. Applications Due September 15, 2009!!!

--Spring 2010 Exchange Program Fee: Approx. $3,765 (based on new UGA in-state tuition—Out Of State Students pay IN-State rates!!!!!); Additional expenses include airfare, accommodation at host university, and personal expenses.  HOPE and UGA Financial Aid may be used on all UGA exchange programs.

Spring 2010 Exchange Application Deadline:  September 15, 2009

Additional exchange opportunities will become available for Fall 2010/Full-year 2010-11 and Spring 2011.

6. Attention Returned Study Abroad Students: STUDY ABROAD PEER ADVISOR PROGRAM

Do you still want to talk about your study abroad experience? Need an interested audience for your study abroad stories and memories? Want to encourage other UGA students to study abroad? Want to add to your resume?

The Office of International Education is looking for peer advisors for the 2009-2010 academic year. We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels. You can choose to participate in as many events as your schedule permits.

7. Global Health Volunteer Abroad Opportunities with Global Impact Corps

Be a Global Impact Fellow: Socially responsible, effective volunteering abroad. Unite For Sight's Global Impact Corps is an *immersive global health experience* for students and professionals. Assignments are flexible and take place throughout the year.

Through hands-on, structured training, fellows gain a comprehensive understanding about best practices in volunteerism, global health, and international development.  Global Impact Fellows gain skills and are nurtured to become new leaders in global health.  Additionally, Global Impact Fellows may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional
program for fellows interested in pursuing global health  research.

9. Reminders for Students who are about to begin Fall 2009 Study Abroad


This is a reminder for students attending a non-UGA/external study abroad program or a UGA exchange program (transcript issued by another U.S. or foreign university) to complete the Credit Approval Form and submit the CAF fee before you depart for your study abroad program.

The form serves to let UGA know you will be studying abroad, and to pre-approve your transfer credit, plus to help maintain your eligibility to keep your HOPE and financial aid.  (Students attending UGA sponsored programs will receive resident credit instead and do not need to
complete this form.)

The Credit Approval Form will require you to go to the Undergraduate Admissions Office and then to your academic advisor. When it is complete, it should be returned with the CAF fee, to the Office of International Education, Bank of America Building, 3rd Floor, 110 E. Clayton Street, at least 3 weeks prior to departure. You will not receive any financial aid, including the HOPE scholarship, nor maintain student status at UGA while abroad, if you do not fill out this form. The CAF serves as the official UGA approval for your study abroad program.

The Office of International Education recommends that all current study abroad students register with the local US Embassy in your host country. Students may easily register on-line via the US State Department website:

Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an
emergency, and to receive regular safety/security updates issued for residents in your host country while abroad. Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Please do take the responsibility to register your stay abroad with the US State Department while on your study abroad program.
