1. Opportunities To Learn About Studying Abroad:

- 25th UGA Study, Work, & Travel Abroad Fair
September 30, 2009 & October 1, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm:
Sponsored by Office of International Education. This annual two-day event is an opportunity for UGA students and faculty to gather useful information about various international education opportunities. Students are encouraged to visit the fair on both days, since different study abroad programs will be represented each day. Tate Hall, 5th floor of Tate Student Center. - UGA Costa Rica Info Sessions in September: 16th, 24th, & 30th

- The European Council of the University System of Georgia is excited to announce their Summer Study Abroad Programs, available to students from throughout Georgia.

The European Council sponsors large summer study programs for USG students in major locations in Europe, including St. Petersburg, Bonn, Madrid, Paris, Waterford and London. In courses taught largely by faculty from USG colleges and universities, students blend classroom experiences with group and individual travel as they earn academic credit at their home institutions. These programs bring together students and faculty from across Georgia to share in four or five week intensive learning and travel ventures.

- Walk-in Advising with a Study Abroad Representative in Memorial Hall:
Are you interested in studying, working, or volunteering abroad? If so, you can stop by Memorial Hall on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1:30-5:00pm to meet with a study abroad representatives. No appointment is necessary these are walk-in sessions! The study abroad representatives will be in Memorial Hall, Room 233 (in the ICA Department suite). You can also schedule an appointment to meet with a study abroad advisor at their main location downtown at the Bank of America Building.

- Options Abroad Sessions:
In these 50-minute information sessions, a study abroad Advisor in the Office of Study Abroad will explain the basics of finding a study abroad program, using the resources in our study abroad library, the process of transferring credit from an external study abroad program, financial aid and scholarships for study abroad, health and insurance, basic travel information, information on working, volunteering, or interning abroad, and SISA, the study abroad listserv.

2. Petters Foundation Scholarship (for business students): Deadline Sept. 30

The John T. Petters Foundation is a private foundation that works to advance the educational experiences by providing scholarships of deserving undergraduate students. The Foundation focuses its scholarships to support international business study abroad and social entrepreneurship service programs. 2009 Petters scholars received awards between $2000 and $8000.

There are 2 different award cycles each year to apply for a Petters Foundation Scholarship. For Winter/Spring 2010 programs: applications must be submitted online by September 30th. Funds will be distributed in November and December.
Eligibility: The John T. Petters Foundation seeks to increase study abroad opportunities for students who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. This scholarship is open to U.S.undergraduate college students in good academic standing who meet the following criteria:
• The Applicant must be pursuing a study abroad program that has a focus on international business
• The Applicant should be undergoing the study abroad application process which would be eligible for credit by the student's home institution
• The Applicant must have financial need for scholarship funding
• The Applicant must be a United States citizen
Selection Criteria: Our Foundation looks to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad including, but not limited to students with:
• High financial need
• Interest in studying in diverse countries
• Interest in study programs that emphasize cultural immersion
• Diverse ethnic backgrounds
• Accomplishments that indicate leadership, character, integrity and motivation
• Disabilities
Judging of Applications: The selection criterion for the John T. Petters Scholarship reflects its core values. All applications are reviewed in their entirety.
• Financial need (extra attention is shown to applicants who demonstrate high need including working students, students taking out loans and students with low family income)
• Personal essay
• Passion for education and studying abroad
• Academic performance (official transcript required)
• Faculty and advisor recommendations
• Study Abroad Program (extra attention is shown to programs over three weeks in length and programs that focus on cultural immersion)
Note: Funds will only be granted upon acceptance into program
To apply for Summer/Fall 2010 programs…keep in mind…
• January 1: Students may begin to submit applications
• February 10: Applications must be submitted using the John T. Petters Foundation web site
• March 20: Finalists are chosen
• April 10: Recipients are chosen
• April/May: Funds are distributed

3. American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) program scholarships: Deadline: 10/1

AIFS American Institute for Foreign Study runs programs in Spain, Italy, Mexico, France, Ireland, Hungary and Poland. They offer numerous scholarships for their participants. Deadlines for Spring Quarter and Spring Semester 2010 programs are October 1. For more info on any of the scholarships, visit the AIFS website: http://www.aifsabroad.com/scholarships.asp

-AIFS International Scholarships: $1000 to students who demonstrate high academic achievement and write an essay addressing “How study abroad will impact my academic and personal growth.” To be considered, you must submit the AIFS scholarship application, the program application, the required application fee of $95, official transcripts of all college records to date and an academic reference. Students must meet the minimum requirements for the program to which they are applying, have at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA, show leadership potential and be involved in extracurricular activities centered on multicultural or international issues.
- AIFS Diversity Scholarship: One AIFS Diversity Scholarships for 50% of the program fee and round trip air fare will be awarded. Three runner-up AIFS Diversity Scholarships of $2,000 each will also be awarded. To be considered for the AIFS Diversity Scholarship, applicants must submit the scholarship application materials in addition to the AIFS study abroad application and the required application fee of $95 by October 1 for Spring Quarter/Spring Semester. 4. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program: Deadline Oct 6.

Earn up to $8000 for study abroad (for U.S. citizens who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding, and who will be studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country): Awards are for up to $5000 plus a possible additional Award for Critical Language Study. Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are eligible for an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 50 Critical Need Language Supplements were offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2008-2009 academic year. Critical Need Languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic languages, Persian, Indic languages, Korean, Russian

The Gilman Scholarship Program seeks to diversify the kinds of undergraduates who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Specifically, the Gilman Program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.

Spring 2010 & Summer 2010 Applications (for programs beginning between December 15, 2009 and April 15, 2010): Online applications opened on August 20th. Student Deadline to apply online is October 6th. The Gilman Scholarship Program is piloting a special summer award cycle for students participating in summer 2010 study abroad programs. To be eligible applicants must meet all of the criteria listed above and must be majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) field. This pilot cycle for summer 2010 is only open to students in the STEM fields who meet the criteria listed above.

The Fall 2010 application cycle will open in February 2010, with an April 2010 deadline.

The Gilman staff will lead a series of discussions focused on various application topics in a webinar format. Webinars are conferences conducted via the internet, designed to bring live web interaction between presenters and the audience. We will cover the following topics:
• Walk Through the Application Process: How to Apply (students). August 25, 2009 & September 29, 2009
• Program Overview: What is the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program? September 8, 2009
• Composing a Successful Statement of Purpose & Follow-On Project Essay. August 1, 2009 & September 22, 2009

5. Bridging Scholarship for studies in Japan: Deadline 10/6

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan.

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 20 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2010. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Spring 2010 programs are those beginning between January and April 2010 and continuing for at least three months. (Summer program participants are not eligible for Bridging Scholarships.) Students planning to study abroad in Japan beginning in Fall 2010 or for the 2010-2011 academic year should apply in April 2010 for the Fall 2010 scholarships.

The deadline for applications for Spring 2010 scholarships is October 6, 2009. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 25. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.

6. UGA Alumni Association Study Abroad Fellowship, Deadline 10/9.

For UGA undergraduates attending a semester/full-year UGA-sponsored study abroad or exchange program. 3.0 minimum GPA. Have at least 1 semester remaining at UGA after program. Fall and Spring deadlines each year. Awards are up to $3000. 7. Academic Programs International (API) program scholarships: Deadline: 10/16

Academic Programs International* runs study abroad programs to destinations that include locations in Spain, Italy, Mexico, France, Ireland, Hungary and Poland. API awards approximately $250,000 in scholarship money annually ranging from $250-$1,000 per student! You may download a scholarship form from our website. The requirements are as follows:
1. The student must have applied to and been accepted on an API program.
2. The student must obtain one additional letter of recommendation (in addition to the one required for the API application) from a professor or an assistant professor (for a total of 2 letters).
3. The student must submit two essays:
o A one-page essay about the current political situation in the country for which you are applying.
o A one-page personal essay stating your goals for studying abroad, and any financial needs, financial aid status, or special circumstances about which you would like API to know.
4. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher in order to apply.
5. Scholarship application deadlines:
For Fall/Year: June 10
For Spring: October 15
For Summer: April 1

8. Elizabeth Suzanne Schaefer Scholarship, Deadline 10/20
Only for UGA undergraduates attending External or UGA-sponsored study abroad or exchange program. 3.0 minimum GPA. Application includes an essay describing your educational goals and how study abroad will complement your studies at UGA.

9. SPRING SEMESTER ABROAD TO COSTA RICA'S EARTH UNIVERSITY: Scholarship Opportunity for UGA Undergraduate. Deadline 10/30
Since 1998, the UGA Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) has carried out a student internship program with Costa Rica's EARTH University (Escuela de Agricultura de la Región Tropical Húmeda), bringing in that span over a dozen EARTH students to UGA and providing occasional internship opportunities and exchanges for UGA students and faculty. EARTH University, located in Guácimo, Limón, Costa Rica is a private, international, non-profit university which offers an undergraduate program leading to a licenciatura degree in agricultural sciences and the rational use of natural resources. EARTH University was created out of a conviction that the environmental and social challenges confronting the planet can be resolved through education that promotes science, technology and entrepreneurship while focusing on essential human values, leadership and a commitment to social and environmental service. For spring semester 2010, LACSI will provide a scholarship to send one highly qualified, advanced Spanish proficiency UGA undergraduate student to EARTH University to take courses for academic credit. The scholarship will cover the student's roundtrip airfare and living expenses during their tenure at EARTH University. The spring semester at EARTH University begins on January 18, 2010. The selected student will work with the UGA Office of International Education's study abroad staff to get pre-departure course credit transfer approvals initiated.
If this scholarship interests you, please send 1) a letter expressing how a semester at EARTH University would further your academic goals and 2) a copy of your most recent transcripts to Mr. Paul Duncan, Assistant Director, Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute, 290 South Hull Street, Athens, GA 30602. Deadline for submission of the letter and transcripts is Friday, October 30, 2009.
Sample EARTH University courses available in spring 2010 include: Cultivos Trópicales, Manejo de Plagas (Entomología), Manejo de Plagas (Malezas), Introducción a la Realidad Latinoamericana, Procesos Fisiológicos y Sistemas Poscosecha, Sistemas Agropecuarios Sostenibles, Propiedades de los Suelos del Trópico, Silvicultura Tropical, Ecología, Procesamiento de Alimentos, Riego y Drenaje, Economía, Política y el Ambiente, Mercadeo y Comercio Internacional, Cultivo de Banano, Nutrición Animal, Fruticultura, Plantas Ornamentales.

10. Zeta Phi Beta Deborah Partridge Wolfe International Fellowship: Accepting applications now through Feb 1, 2010.

Available to graduate or undergraduate United States students studying abroad and/or graduate or undergraduate foreign students studying within. Awarded for full-time study for one academic year (Fall-Spring). Amount varies from $500 to $1,000 paid directly to recipient. Documented proof of academic study and plan of program must be sent to the Scholarship Chairperson with
signature of school administrator or Program Director.

13. Volunteer for the Study Abroad Fair!!!

Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer Mitchell wants to hear from you so she can sign you up to help with this year’s fair. Student volunteers help make the fair a successful event while gaining some insight into Study Abroad along the way. The fair will take place on Wednesday September 30th & Thursday, October 1st in the Tate Center Great Hall on the 5th floor from 10am to 3pm for students. Volunteers are needed from 7:30am to 4pm in various areas and booths (set-up, greeting exhibitors, break-down, and more). Volunteers should be available for at least a two hour slot. The work involved will include greeters, runners, and peer advisors.

14. Attention Returned Study Abroad Students: STUDY ABROAD PEER ADVISOR PROGRAM

Do you still want to talk about your study abroad experience? Need an interested audience for your study abroad stories and memories? Want to encourage other UGA students to study abroad? Want to add to your resume?

The Office of International Education is looking for peer advisors for the 2009-2010 academic year. We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels. You can choose to participate in as many events as your schedule permits.

16. Reminders for Students who are about to begin Fall 2009 Study Abroad

-CREDIT APPROVAL FORM REMINDER:

This is a reminder for students attending a non-UGA/external study abroad program or a UGA exchange program (transcript issued by another U.S. or foreign university) to complete the Credit Approval Form and submit the CAF fee before you depart for your study abroad program.

The form serves to let UGA know you will be studying abroad, and to pre-approve your transfer credit, plus to help maintain your eligibility to keep your HOPE and financial aid. (Students attending UGA sponsored programs will receive resident credit instead and do not need to
complete this form.)

The Credit Approval Form will require you to go to the Undergraduate Admissions Office and then to your academic advisor. When it is complete, it should be returned with the CAF fee, to the Office of International Education, Bank of America Building, 3rd Floor, 110 E. Clayton Street, at least 3 weeks prior to departure. You will not receive any financial aid, including the HOPE scholarship, nor maintain student status at UGA while abroad, if you do not fill out this form. The CAF serves as the official UGA approval for your study abroad program.

-REGISTER ON-LINE WITH US EMBASSY OVERSEAS:

The Office of International Education recommends that all current study abroad students register with the local US Embassy in your host country. Students may easily register on-line via the US State Department website:

https://travelregistration.state.gov

Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an
emergency, and to receive regular safety/security updates issued for residents in your host country while abroad. Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Please do take the responsibility to register your stay abroad with the US State Department while on your study abroad program.
