Study Abroad Programs

The Duke University semester/academic year program in Madrid, Spain is
extending its spring 2000 deadline to November 19 to accommodate late
applicants.

The Duke in Madrid program, established in 1989, is based at the
Universidad San Pablo and boasts a broad curriculum in the humanities and
social sciences. All courses are taught in Spanish.

Applicants must have completed at least one Spanish course at the advanced
level or have equivalent proficiency. The minimum GPA for admission is 3.0.

Please contact the Office of Study Abroad at Duke University for detailed
information and an application.

AUIP-University of
Mississippi academic field study program in Belize for Spring 2000 has
extended its deadline to November 19.

This is a program for students interested in anthropology, biology,
environmental studies and education, ecology, recreation/tourism, natural
resources, (and we've even had art students).  Students in this hands-on
field program, along with faculty and Belizean guides and cooks, live and
study throughout Belize within the cultures of the local people.
Classrooms range from the barrier reef to tropical rainforests to Mayan
ruins to mountain pine jungles and more!

Students earn 15 semester credits through the University of Mississippi.
The minimum GPA is 2.0 and applicants must have successfully completed at
least one college-level science course.  They should be in good health and
able to swim in order to explore the reefs, jungles, caves and great Mayan
ruins.

Scholarships for Study Abroad

Regents Scholarship for Spring

The application for the Regents Scholarship is due Nov. 1 (delivery date,
not postmark date) for spring 2000 programs. For spring programs, this will
be a $1000 scholarship that can be used on any study abroad program.
Applications should be brought to 201 Barrow Hall or mailed to Bobbi
Lathrop at the address at the end of this e-mail. You can pick up an
application in the study abroad library in 209 Barrow Hall or download it
from our web site at <http://www.uga.edu/oie/forms.htm>. Note that you must
have turned in a Credit Approval Form if you are going on a non-UGA program
and wish to apply for the scholarship.

CIEE Scholarships

The deadlines for all scholarships sponsored by CIEE for spring 2000
programs is Tuesday, October 26 (postmark date). This includes scholarships
for students on CIEE programs, as well as the Bowman Travel grant, which
can be used on any program, but only to certain countries.  For more

Competition for Logo Design for Global Youth Service Day

The International Coordinating Committee of Global Youth Service Day (GYSD)
has launched a contest for the design of its official logo. The theme for
the logo is "young people changing the world and their communities through
volunteer service." The contest is open to community-minded young people
between the ages of five and 25. All designs should be submitted by October
31, 1999, on white, 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Entries should be sent to GYSD Logo
Contest, c/o Youth Service America, 1101 15th Street, NW, Suite 200,
Washington, DC 20005-5002. For more information, please call 202.296.2992,

will be recognized in a special press release on Global Youth Service Day.
The winning design will be featured on all promotional materials, including

International Internships

AIESEC, a student organization at UGA, offers paid international
internships in Business and teaching English as a Second Language in 87
countries. They last from 8 weeks to 1 1/2 years and will begin no sooner
than this summer.
There will be an informational session about the internships Oct. 27:  7-8
p.m. in Sanford Hall, Room 212.  Interviews to pick the candidates will be

Study Abroad Program Representative Visit

Are you considering China as a study abroad destination? If so, then
consider Summer Study in China, an 8 week program in Shanghai, China
focused on China's transition from a centrally planned to a market economy.
Included are: frequent visits to Chinese factories, government offices, and
foreign firms; travel by train to China's interior and to two of China's
ancient capitals, Beijing and Xian. Offered by the Sam Nunn School of
International Affairs, George Tech. There will be an information session
with a video program on Monday, October 25 in the Tate Student Center, Room
140 at 6 p.m.

OPEN POSITION:  Scholarships Coordinator

Chicago (Evanston)-based, non-profit Rotary Foundation of Rotary
International is accepting job applications for the position of Scholarships
Coordinator for its Ambassadorial Scholarships Program, currently the
world's largest, privately funded international study scholarships program.

Primary Job Responsibilities Include:
- Works with U.S. students abroad, international students in the U.S., and
non-U.S. exchanges.
- Advises scholars and Rotarians on ambassadorial responsibilities, study
country specific information (university admission, visa requirements,
etc.), and pre-departure requirements.
- Maintains written, telephone, and electronic communication with scholars,
Rotarians, and study institutions worldwide.
- Responsible for disbursement of approximately $2.5 million in
scholarships, monitors award budget in detail.

Qualified Candidates Will Possess:
- Proficiency in the Portuguese language, through formal Portuguese language
coursework and previous study and/or work experience in Brazil and/or
Portugal.
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word 6.0, Excel 5.0, Peoplesoft 5.12/7.5,
databases, or comparable software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Enjoys working as part of a team of 10 coordinators, yet can also manage
projects independently.
- Supervisory and leadership potential.
- Former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars and or/Rotaract members encouraged to
apply.
