New UGA Study Abroad Program

If you haven't solidified your plans for the summer, a new study abroad
program opportunity is now being offered. It is called Maymester in
Budapest, and it will take place from May 15 - June 25, 2000. There will be
two classes offered: CMLT 3190 - Recent Political History of East and
Central Europe and CMLT 4400/6400 - East and Central European Culture and
Literature. Students will also be provided internship opportunities with
Hungarian government agencies and/or international agencies. This will be
for 3 semester hours, as part of an independent study course with UGA
faculty. The program will include study trips to Austria, Slovakia and
Romania. For more information, see <>.

Turn in Credit Approval Forms before you leave on Summer Study Abroad

If you are attending a non-UGA study abroad program this summer, remember
that you should turn in your Credit Approval Form to the Office of
International Education at least 15 days before you leave. However, the
sooner you turn it in the better. The form can take as much as 2 weeks or
more to complete, so get started now if you'll be leaving campus at the end
of the semester. Make appointments now with the language departments if you
have to get pre-approval for language classes. You should also make sure
you have a Verification of Enrollment Abroad form to take with you and send
to our office a couple of weeks after you arrive. If you need either form,
they are available at: or in the study
abroad library in 209 Barrow Hall.

Before you turn in your Credit Approval Form, make sure you have either
registered for any other courses you intend to take during the Maymester or
summer at UGA, or dropped any courses you no longer plan to take due to
your study abroad plans.

Also, do not forget that you need to have a transcript from your program
sent to UGA's Undergraduate Admissions Office, 212 Terrell Hall, University
of Georgia, Athens, GA 20602-0023 at the end of your program. Once it
arrives, you should meet with your advisor to verify that the classes are
counted towards fulfilling the graduation requirements for which you
received pre-approval on your Credit Approval Form.

If you have any questions about the Credit Approval Form or credit
transfer, please reply to this e-mail or call Lindsey at 542-7903.

Pictures for Study Abroad Catalog Cover

Right now, we are in the process of producing the 2000-2001 University
System of Georgia Catalog of Study Abroad Programs. The cover will feature
photos of students abroad. If you would like to submit a photo or two, it
might be chosen to go on the cover! Pictures of students near nice natural
sites, monuments, etc. or interacting with people from the host country are
ideal. All photos will be returned once the cover designing process is
complete. To submit a photo, mail it to Lindsey Parsons, Office of
International Education, 201 Barrow Hall, University of Georgia, Athens, GA
20602-2407, or drop it by 201 Barrow Hall. Include your return address for
return during the summer.

Survey on Personal Characteristics of Student Sojourner Applicants

A doctoral student from University of Northern Colorado is asking for your
assistance in a survey she is completing for her degree. If you have
applied for a study abroad program (it's okay if you've been accepted) or
are thinking about applying to study abroad but have not yet gone, could
you fill out the survey located at <>?
It takes less than five minutes to complete.

Student Quotes

From a student studying on a UGA Exchange in Japan

. . . Japan is incredibly beautiful with the cherry trees blooming all over
the place, pictures can't do it any justice . . .
Last Friday I decided to take the day for some hanami and go see all of the
cherry trees at Osaka Castle. It was
a gorgeous day, bright sun, clear sky, and lots of people out picnicking
and having a good time. The flowers were beautiful and I spent several
hours under a cherry tree reading and writing.
