STARS Work and Study Abroad Stipends

Applications are now being accepted for STARS Work and Study
Abroad Stipends for students studying abroad during summer
2004, fall 2004, academic year 2004-2005 or spring 2005. The
$500 stipend is meant to count towards the cost of study
abroad, but is paid to students as they complete 71 hours of
work in Office of International Education during spring
semester 2004. This award may be used for any study abroad
program. Application deadline: Nov. 13, 2003. Applications

Upcoming Events

The Office of International Education is sponsoring a
photography contest for international students and U.S.
students who have studied or traveled abroad.  Students may
submit up to three photos to 209 Barrow Hall (across from
the Science Library) by November 3rd.  Photos will be judged
in two categories: People & Culture and Artistic Merit.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category.  For

year’s Photo Contest and are available on Wednesday,
November 5th from 9:00-11:00 a.m., please contact Lindsey

The International Education Week Celebration, including an
international feast, entertainment, silent auction, and
photo contest awards presentation, will be held November
17th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student
Center.  Tickets are $5 for UGA students (with a valid UGA
ID), $8 for non-UGA students, $3 for children 6-12, and free
for children under 6.  Tickets will be available at the Tate
Center Box Office beginning Oct. 24th or at the door the
night of the event.  *A feature of the silent auction will
be at least one round-trip air ticket.*

The OIE will be holding a drawing for a handful of tickets
to the International Education Week Celebration.  To enter,
stop by 209 Barrow Hall, beginning Oct. 27th, to fill out an
entry form.  Entry forms must be completed by Nov. 7th.
Winners will be notified on Nov. 10th.

WANTED: Undergraduate Student Representative to the UGA
Study Abroad Risk Management Review Board

Are you a returned study abroad/exchange student looking to
get more involved?? Applications are now available from the
Office of International Education for the Undergraduate
Student Representative to the UGA Study Abroad Risk
Management Review Board position.
The appointment of the undergraduate representative to the
Risk Management Review Board is typically for one academic
year -- August to May. However, our current student rep will
be graduating and we need a replacement to begin in December
and continue through all of next year. This term may be
renewed for additional years of service. The Risk Management
Review Board meets approximately four times during the
academic year, currently on Fridays from 9am-11am.
The undergraduate student representative provides other
members of the Board with a student’s perspective on the
issues under consideration by the Board.  This position
gives the student an excellent opportunity to broaden
his/her experiences and learn from direct participation how
decisions are made that affect the university. The student
representative may also be called upon to serve on other
committees relating to international education. The
undergraduate student representative is a voting member of
the UGA Study Abroad Risk Management Review Board.

NSEP Boren Scholarships for Study Abroad

The Institute of International Education is accepting
applications for the 2004-05 National Security Education
Program (NSEP) David L. Boren undergraduate scholarships for
study abroad during summer 2004, fall 2004, and spring 2005.
These scholarships provide funding for U.S. students to
study abroad in Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe,
the NIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle
East. Award amounts range from a maximum of $10,000 a
semester to $20,000 for an academic year. Application
deadline: February 12, 2004. For details and an application

CDS International Programs

CDS International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
developing and enhancing opportunities for Americans to
participate in meaningful, practical training opportunities
abroad.  The first program, administered in cooperation with
the partner organization COINED - Comision de Intercambio
Educativo, provides internship opportunities for U.S.
students and young professionals in either Córdoba or Buenos
Aires, Argentina. Unpaid placements are available in
business/ finance, hotel management/ tourism, computer
science, and engineering fields. Two program options are
available: a 1-month Spanish language course and a 2-month
internship with an Argentinean company (Combination
Language/Internship Option) or a 3-month internship with a
host company (Internship Option). The second program,
administered in cooperation with the partner organization
AMILI, provides internship opportunities for U.S. students
and young professionals in all four regions of Ecuador,
including the Galapagos Islands. Unpaid placements are
available in business/ finance, hotel management/ tourism,
computer science, engineering, social work/humanitarian and
environmental fields. Two program options are available: a 1-
week language course followed by a 3-month internship or a 4-
week Spanish language course with a 2-month internship at an
Ecuadorian company.

Announcements from ISL

The Indian Student Association (ISA) is proud to be
hosting "SOUTH ASIAN HERITAGE WEEK" for the first time ever
at the University of Georgia along with Indian Cultural
Exchange, Muslim Student Association, and Pakistani Student
Association.  South Asian Heritage Week will be from
November 3 through November 9.  Each day will consist of a
program highlighting South Asia.  For additional information
