Subject: Hurricane Relief Efforts-How you can help

NASAE Members:

Please help us distribute this message over any appropriate state listserv(s) and/or website so that we can get this information out to as many members of the ag ed family as possible.

Please also help us letting members in your states know that state leaders in those areas affected have requested that all calls on how they can be assisted be directed to the NAAE office at 1-800-509-0204.  They are trying to focus their efforts at the moment on contacting their teachers and assessing their needs and would appreciate those calls being directed elsewhere.

Please do not hesitate to contact the NAAE office if you have any questions or concerns.

Samantha

Ag Ed Family Members:

All of us are very concerned about our friends and colleagues in the areas that have been affected so severely by Hurricane Katrina.  We are receiving many phone calls and e-mail messages from people seeking information and exploring opportunities to help.

At this time, there is so much that we don’t know about the condition of our colleagues in the Gulf Coast states.  Frankly, there’s more that we don’t know than we do know.  We have been in contact with some state agricultural education leaders in the Gulf Coast states.  From these state leaders, we are aware of severe property damage and perhaps the total loss of agricultural education programs across the affected region.

Communication with persons in the areas most severely affected by the hurricane is difficult, if not impossible.  The state agricultural education leaders in these areas are still trying to determine the extent of the damage and to assess what is needed.  The state leaders have asked that we not attempt to send supplies to these states because we simply do not yet know what is needed and we have limited ways to get supplies to the damaged areas.

Many of our colleagues have inquired as to how they can help. We understand that people feel the need to help, and to do so now.  The National FFA Organization is organizing an opportunity for FFA chapters to conduct fundraisers and contribute funds to a relief effort.  Plans are underway for a “Roll Call of Chapters” at the 2005 National FFA Convention during which FFA chapters may contribute funds to the relief effort.  You will be receiving more information about this directly from the National FFA Organization.  This is a tremendous opportunity for your local FFA chapters.

NAAE will also receive financial contributions for this relief effort.  State associations of agricultural educators, individuals, business entities, etc. may submit tax-deductible contributions to NAAE.  You may make checks payable to NAAE, memo the checks to “Ag Ed Program Hurricane Relief,” and mail the checks to NAAE, 300 Garrigus Building, Lexington, KY  40546-0215.  We will maintain a record of all contributors and amount contributed.

All financial contributions for this relief effort, whether submitted to NAAE or to the National FFA Organization, will be distributed to the Gulf Coast states based on applications submitted to the National Council for Agricultural Education.  The Council will request applications from the states affected by the hurricane and then distribute funds accordingly.  Applications will be submitted to The Council from the Team Ag Ed entities in the respective states to ensure that funds are distributed as appropriately as possible.  The application process will be made as simple as possible to facilitate the needs of the states.

In addition to the fund raising effort, we will be creating an “Adopt An Ag Ed Program” effort in which an ag ed program (or programs) may “adopt” a program affected by the hurricane to provide specific needs (supplies, temporary housing and school enrollment for families, whatever is needed).   We will provide specific information on this “Adopt An Ag Ed Program” initiative as soon as we have enough information from the Gulf Coast states to get started.

Please be sure you are subscribed to the U.S. Ag Ed listserv (details at http://www.naae.org/about/usagedlistserve/)  to receive the most current information about these hurricane relief initiatives.  Details will also be posted to the NAAE website at http://www.naae.org.
