STUDY, WORK AND TRAVEL ABROAD FAIR -- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2005

Researching study abroad options? Planning to travel abroad soon?  Want
to learn more?  Come to the FAIR and get some encouragement!

See you at the 21st Annual UGA Study, Work and Travel Abroad Fair:

**DATE:  Tuesday, October 4, 2005
**TIME:    10 am - 3 pm
**PLACE:  Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center

**Meet UGA Study Abroad and Exchange Program Directors, Coordinators of
External Programs, plus Representatives from University System of
Georgia study abroad programs!

Over 100 representatives will be on hand to answer your questions!!

ANNOUNCING THE 2005 OIE - INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK PHOTO CONTEST

As part of the International Education Week Celebration, the Office of
International Education proudly presents "International Photo Contest:
World in
Photos."  This contest is open to all UGA students who have studied or
traveled outside the United States and all international students who
are currently studying at UGA.

-- RULES:  U.S. student must submit photos from an experience outside
the U.S.; international students may submit photos from their home
country or an international travel destination.   * Each student may
enter up to 3 photos. * Photos may be between the sizes of 3 X 5 and 5 X 7.

-- DEADLINE:  5:00 PM on October 31st

-- TO ENTER:  Use the Photo Entry Form available on the OIE website at
http://www.uga.edu/oie/iew/photo.htm or   http://www.uga.edu/oie/iew OR
collect a form from the Office of International Education, 209 Barrow
Hall.

Students should submit photos in an envelope addressed to John Pine,
Photo Contest, Office of International Education, 209 Barrow Hall
along with your completed entry form.

--JUDGING: * Photos will be judged in two categories: "People & Culture"
and "Artistic Merit " Judges will look for photos that communicate a
cross-cultural experience
in the People & Culture category and will look for artistic quality in
the Artistic Merit category.

--AWARDS: 1st place prize winners: $75   /   2nd place prize winners:
$50   /  3rd place prize winners: $25



**PHOTO CONTEST AWARDS NIGHT & IEW CELEBRATION:  Photos will be
displayed at the International Education Week Celebration on 11/14/05.
Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded at the IEW
celebration.    A People's Choice Award will be also be voted on during
the IEW evening event.

--WHERE:  Georgia Hall,  Tate Student Center

--IEW EVENT TICKETS:  Plan to attend the International Education Week
Celebration featuring the Photo Contest, international cuisine, silent
auction and entertainment!
This is a fundraising event and all ticket sales, silent auction
donations/sales fully contribute to the IEW Scholarships for Study
Abroad and International Students!
Last year funds provided scholarships for 7 study abroad and
international students!  Tickets should be available for purchase by
late October at the Tate Center Box
Office.

STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS

THE FREEMAN-ASIA AWARD SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

This scholarship is designed to support American undergraduates with
demonstrated financial need who are planning on studying overseas in
East or Southeast Asia.  Freeman-ASIA Award Program grantees are
expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to
encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater
understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home
communities.  Since the launch of the program in 2000, the Freeman-ASIA
Award Program has supported over 2,000 U.S. undergraduates with their
study abroad plans in East and Southeast Asia.

--Eligibility:  Spring Scholarships available for students who will
study abroad for 10 weeks or more in Asia with a start date next
December - April.

--Application Deadline:  October 21, 2005
Application cycle opens September 7, 2005 for Spring Programs Endorsed
application and signed Financial Need Validation Form must be received
by Institute of International Education by 5:00 PM EST October 21, 2005.

ATJ BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY ABROAD IN JAPAN

--Description:   Recipients of Bridging Scholarships  will receive a
stipend of $2,500 - $4000 (depending on semester/year programs).
The Bridging Scholarship program will award 30 scholarships to American
students participating in study abroad programs in Japan that begin in
Spring 2006. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and
attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are
eligible to apply for these scholarships.

--Eligibility:  US citizen or permanent resident enrolled as
undergraduate student in any field at a US college or university, who
will study abroad in Japan.

--Deadline:  October 5, 2005  (This is NOT a postmark deadline - All
materials must be received by end of business day Wednesday, October 5).

ELIZABETH SUZANNE SCHAEFER STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

The Office of International Education is pleased to announce the OIE
application deadline for the Elizabeth Suzanne Schaefer Scholarship in
support of UGA students who will study abroad in Spring 2006 or Summer
2006.

--Application Deadline:  Friday, October 14, 2005

--Award: $500 scholarships provided through support of the
Schaefer-Sammons family and the UGA Arch Foundation.

--Eligibility: UGA undergraduates attending a UGA study abroad or
exchange program or an external study abroad (not sponsored by UGA). 3.0
minimum GPA required.

** Preference will be given for academic merit, applicants from groups
that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. students of color,
first generation college students, students from rural Georgia,
math/science majors), participation in programs with language/cultural
immersion component or located in a under-represented geographic regions
(i.e. outside of Western Europe).

--To Apply: Download an Office of International Education scholarship
application from the OIE website at http://www.uga.edu/oie/sagensch.htm
and submit complete application to the Office of International
Education.   (Additional study abroad scholarships are also available
using this application form.)

GLIMPSE FALL 2005 WRITING CONTEST

Contribute to Glimpse's Fall 2005 writing contest, "There's No Place
Like Home."       Grand prize is a $500 travel voucher, courtesy of STA
Travel!

* THEME: Many who venture abroad are prepared for culture shock but
quite surprised when it happens in reverse: that is, when they return
home and find it difficult to settle back into their old habits and
routines. What challenges did you face upon your return home? Which
cultural aspects of your home country were the hardest to reintegrate
into your daily life? Choose a few key anecdotes both from your time
abroad and after your return home that illustrate the ways in which your
overseas experiences transformed specific attitudes, habits and/or
perspectives.

* DEADLINE: Monday, November 7, 2005
