International Street Festival rescheduled in Memorial Hall at UGA

ATHENS, Ga – The 8th Annual International Street Festival, “Bringing the World to Athens,” has been rescheduled for Friday, April 28 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Ballroom of the University of Georgia’s Memorial Hall.

The festival, original planned for early April in downtown Athens, was cancelled due to inclement weather. Numerous international student organizations and local community groups will sponsor informative and interactive cultural displays as well as musical and dance performances.

Many door prizes and giveaways will be available from sponsoring businesses. These include a $1,000 kayak and accessories from Perception Kayaks, gift certificates for martial arts lessons from Athens Tae Kwon Do, and hundreds of dollars in restaurant gift certificates.

There is no cost to attend the International Street Festival nor to participate in any of its activities, performances, or prize drawings.

Visitors will have an opportunity to collect “passport” stamps from each of the countries represented; those who collect all available stamps will receive a ticket for a prize drawing.

Children’s activities will allow young guests to color international paper dolls, to create their own flags, to craft African necklaces and headdresses, and to hear stories of children from around the world.

“The Street Festival has come to mean so much to so many people that we felt a strong commitment to reschedule,” says ISL Coordinator Leigh Poole.

“It’s also a wonderful opportunity for us to thank all of the sponsoring agencies, University departments, and local Athens business that have sponsored the festival for the past eight years. We greatly appreciate their support.”

Additional support for the festival was given by R.E.M. Athens, LLC, University Housing, and Allison Krache.

The ISL Office was formed in 1997 to support UGA’s goal of fostering a campus climate that appreciates the interdependent global society.
