STUDY, WORK AND TRAVEL ABROAD FAIR

It's finally here!  Come join us on Oct. 9th & 10th in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..  Get information about all the upcoming opportunities to work and study abroad! Vendors from around the country will be there to answer questions and help you find the program that is right for you.   You don't want to miss out!  This is a "drop-in" event so feel free to stop by both days.

STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY IN AFRICA
 
Funding from the U.S. Department of Education will provide twelve scholarships for undergraduates to study in Dakar, Senegal at the Universite Cheikh anta Diop, or in Durban, South Africa at the University of KwaZulu-Natal  from January to June 2007. These awards are coordinated through Michigan State University and the Council for Opportunity in Education.
 
 Awards of approximately $5,875 will be given to recipients. The estimated total cost that each student will need to contribute to either program is $3,125. The exact estimation will be determined in October 2006.
 
  Eligibility requirements:
   1) You must be a participant in a Student Support Services or in a Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate program; or you must be a first generation college student, Pell grant eligible, and never studied abroad.
  2) You must have a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher at the time of
   application
  3) You must have at least junior status by January 2007
 
Applicants to the Senegal program must have a minimum of three semesters of college level French prior to participation. Two years of French are preferred.

THE FREEMAN-ASIA AWARD SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

This scholarship is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning on studying overseas in East or Southeast Asia. Freeman-ASIA Award Program grantees are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities. Since the launch of the program in 2000, the Freeman-ASIA Award Program has supported over 2,000 U.S. undergraduates with their study abroad plans in East and Southeast Asia.

--Eligibility: Spring Scholarships available for students who will study abroad for 10 weeks or more in Asia with a start date next December - April.

--Application Deadline: Application cycle opens September 6, 2006 for Spring Programs. Endorsed application and signed Financial Need Validation Form must be received by Institute of International Education by 5:00 PM EST October 18, 2006.

ELIZABETH SUZANNE SCHAEFER SCHOLARSHIP
 

A $500 scholarship for UGA undergraduates attending UGA or external study abroad or exchange programs.

--3.0 minimum GPA required.

AUSTRALEARN INFORMATION SESSION
 

Mark your calendars!  Michael Swift from AustraLearn will be meeting with students interested in studying in Australia and New Zealand.  He will be on campus October 10, from 12-2 in Tate 141 where he can meet with you one on one.  He will also be at the Study, Work and Travel
Abroad Fair on October 9.  If you are thinking about studying in Australia or New Zealand, this is a great program to check out.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK (IEW) CELEBRATION & PHOTO CONTEST

The Office of International Education proudly presents International Education Week Celebration.   This is an opportunity for the local and international community to come together and celebrate International diversity.  The event will feature international cuisine, photo contest (details below) and entertainment.

--WHEN:   November 16, 2006, 6:00 - 9:00 PM

--WHERE:   Georgia Hall, Tate Student Center

--IEW EVENT TICKETS:   Tickets will go on sale at the Tate Student Center starting in late October. 
                               UGA students:         $5
                               Non-students:          $8
                               Children 6-12:           $3
                               Children under 6:      Free

This is a fundraising event and all ticket sales fully contribute to the IEW Scholarships for Study Abroad and International Students!   Last year funds provided scholarships for 8 study abroad and international students! 

INTERNATIONAL PHOTO CONTEST:   THE WORLD IN PICTURES        

The photo contest is open to all UGA students who have lived, studied, worked, or traveled outside the United States and international students currently studying at UGA.              

-- RULES:  U.S. student must submit photos from an experience outside the U.S.; international students may submit photos from their home country or an international travel destination.   * Each student may enter up to 3 photos. * Photos may be between the sizes of 3 X 5 and 5 X 7 and must be submitted in hard copy.

-- DEADLINE:  5:00 PM on October 31st

-- TO ENTER:   Use the Photo Entry Form available on the OIE website at   http://www.uga.edu/oie/iew under Photo Contest OR collect a form from the Office of International Education, 203 Barrow Hall.

Students should submit photos in an envelope addressed to Monica Catalano, Photo Contest, Office of International Education, 203 Barrow Hall along with your completed entry form.

--JUDGING: * Photos will be judged in two categories: "People & Culture" and "Artistic Merit " Judges will look for photos that communicate a cross-cultural experience in the People & Culture category and will look for artistic quality in the Artistic Merit category.

--AWARDS: 1st place prize winners: $75
                    2nd place prize winners: $50
                    3rd place prize winners: $25

**awards are presented at the International Education Week Celebration on Nov. 16, 2006 in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center from 6-9 p.m.
