Ron Deal, Landscape Designer, is putting together a Landscape
Competition for FFA students at the Classic Home and Garden Show.

Goal - Public Relations for FFA and connecting more public to the Green

The competition will be held on March 3rd in Athens at the Classic
Center during the prime visiting hours of the Home and Garden show.

                           Rules and Regulations

The event tests participant knowledge and skills in various aspects of the
landscape industry.  The team event includes hands-on design and
arrangement of landscape plants and other landscape materials (pavers,
sculpture, etc.). Students will use provided materials to design and
execute a landscape design in a given amount of time (see section VI).
Landscape will not include soil (event to be held on an outdoor patio under
tents). Lunch for students and teacher, electricity and water will be
provided on site.

Event is to be held Saturday, March 3, 2007 in conjunction with the Athens
Home and Garden Show at the Classic Center, 300 N. Thomas Street, Athens,
GA. Access to building will be available for
use of restrooms, snack machines, etc. Please see Classic Center website

To demonstrate skills in the landscape field, encourage career development,
and recognize excellence in students of horticulture and landscaping in the
State of Georgia. This design competition is not necessarily to demonstrate
proper horticultural practices, but instead to challenge the students’
sense of aesthetics, combination of color, texture, imagination, sense of
balance, order, etc. All the things that make for a good design.

Additionally, the Athens Area Home Builders Association feels this
competition will add interest to the horticultural side of the Home and
Garden Show.

1.    Students in the State of Georgia interested in landscape are eligible
to apply and participate. Grades 9 – 12 are best suited for this
competition, but grades 6 – 8 will be considered by competition coordinator
(see Entry Form for contact information). Entry forms must be returned by
February 2, 2007 and will be accepted in the order they are received.

1. Each school may enter one team. Team Make-up: A team will consist of
   three or four members.  One score will be given for the team effort.
2. It is highly recommended that participants come dressed appropriately
   for the weather since the event is held outdoors under a tented area.
3. Teacher participation should be at a minimum and be only a supporting
   role. Teams are expected to work independently of the teacher.
4. Each team may have and should bring their own tools such as
   sketchpad/paper, pencils/pens, scale and a calculator. Competition
   coordinator reserves the right to disallow any tools that give an unfair
   advantage. A whiteboard is to be provided to each team so the public can
   view the design process. Students will be encouraged to use whiteboards.
5. This event will follow the general Event Format (see section VI). Format
   may vary the day of the event, but all efforts will be made to
   accommodate teams if any adjustments/changes are necessary.
6. Materials to be donated to this competition by area landscape suppliers
   may vary depending on what is looking best at the nurseries at the first
   of March (see section VII). Competition coordinator will obtain
   abundant, quality materials to ensure a satisfactory and successful
   event for teams.
7.   Each team will be assigned a space no larger than 10’ x 10’ to execute
   their design.

1. Two awards will be given: Judges’ Choice and People's Choice.  Voting
   will take place on Saturday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. (show ends at six
   p.m.) and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. People's Choice votes will be
   received up until two p.m. at the voting kiosk located near the tented
   competition area. Judges will visit the areas as their schedules allow
   (most will have booths at the show) up until two p.m. on Sunday.

2. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. at tents by the competition
   coordinator.  Preferably teachers and teams will be present when winners
   are announced, but it is not necessary.  Winning teams will receive a
   framed certificate for display at the sponsoring school.  Certificate
   will be delivered to the sponsoring school following the event.

Athens Home and Garden Show hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Registration of teams will begin promptly at 10 a.m. to conclude no later
than 11 a.m.  Teams arriving after 11 a.m. will not be allowed to compete.

Teams will be assigned their space and allowed to get familiar with the
provided materials from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Lunch will be provided from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (stay at the
Classic Center).

At 12:00 p.m. teams will draw numbers for each round of "wildcard
selections" and make selections until all materials have been exhausted.
Each selection will be timed at 30 seconds.

By approx. 12:30 p.m. landscape design execution will begin. All teams must
finish no later than 4 p.m.   Teachers are encouraged to tour the show
while the students work independently.

Teams will be photographed with their landscape when they finish. Voting
begins after 4 p.m.

Sunday, March 4, 2007
Athens Home and Garden Show hours are 12 p.m.-5 p.m.

Judges and the public will vote between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.  Teams and
teachers are free to tour the show.

Award announcements will be at three p.m. at or near the tented area.


A group of materials will be provided for each space and will be the same
materials for each team (for example: three holly, five junipers,
steppingstones, etc.).  A more than adequate supply of materials will be
available.  It is hoped this will give students an opportunity to show
their skills in estimating appropriate numbers of materials to be used in a
given space. Secondly there will be a "wildcard selection" process where
each team will pull a number out of a hat and that will be the order in
which they can visit a pool of miscellaneous materials to use in their
landscape. Each selection must be made within 30 seconds. This should
provide an opportunity for the students to express their creativity and
individuality in the design process, and this will also allow for variety
in each team’s landscape. Students are not required to use all materials;
any and all of the materials provided or selected may be used in the

Students should expect to see the following materials:
Many evergreens (due to the time of year of the competition). Annual
bedding plants. Perennials and groundcovers.  Hardscape materials (pavers,
steppingstones). Mulch and pebbles. Garden ornaments.
