Changing
Young Lives & A Community’s Future through Care and Agriculture
Do you
have or know of an FFA chapter using or wanting to use a community garden or a
tutoring program to both increase agricultural awareness and change the lives
of elementary school students? Funding from Campbell Soup Company has made
possible community garden and tutoring grant opportunities through the National
FFA Organization’s Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS) program. Each
grant can be up to $2,000! The deadline for applying is August 2, 2010.
Contact the PALS office at 317-802-4413 or [log in to unmask] for more information.
For
those FFA programs with an existing community garden project, the Green
Education Foundation is currently requesting video footage for the creation of
a video addressing childhood obesity and childhood hunger in America. This
video is likely to be housed on the homepage of a major government website, and
will be shared at national and international conferences for seasons to come.
Specifically, they want footage that may be integrated –videos/video
clips/high-quality photographs of kids gardening and cooking from the garden,
talking about the impact of gardening on their lives, etc. All
contributors will be credited in the video. Before sending, please ensure that
proper permission has been attained for the use of images of children, include
a brief description with each photo, as well as the school/youth group name,
city and state. Submissions can be sent to Jessica Drench at [log in to unmask],
or send to the address listed below:

The PALS
program staff encourages all FFA programs to consider planting a community
garden of any size as a part of Earth Day (April 22). Standards-based
lessons, activities and gardening instructions are all provided on www.greenthumbchallenge.org.
(Remember to log your chapter’s community service hours into FFA’s Million Hour
Challenge! www.ffa.org/mhc)
