Greetings Teachers

The 2011 Southeastern Flower Show Youth Division invites you to join us in a
celebration of garden creativity.
Held this year at the Cobb Galleria Centre, February 25, 26 and 27, our
theme is* “In Tune With Blooms…….Play in the Garden” *

GOAL: To design and build a musical instrument out of plant materials.

We invite you to use your imagination and create a musical instrument made
from plant material.
Entry in this category is open to all middle and high school student  groups
such as schools (public, private and home), churches, Junior Master Gardener
Programs, FFA, 4-H Clubs and scout troops.


·     *Size: *Completed musical instrument must not exceed 1 foot in width
and 2 feet in height.

·     *Material: *Dried plant material, such as gourds, sticks, seeds,
stumps, etc.  Milled lumber may not be used.  Finished project may not
contain more than 30% non-plant material.

·     *Cost:* A maximum of $40.00 (forty dollars) may be spent on completed
musical instrument.  Budget must be submitted with final project.

·     *Printed material*: Must include up to one page (8 1/2” x 11”)
explanation of the project, including cultural context of the instrument if

·     All entries must include names and ages of group members.

*Scale of Points & Criteria for Judging:*

·     30%: Design.  Is the project usable as an instrument?  Is it

·     20%: Creativity.  Is plant material used in a creative way?

·     20%: Presentation.  Is this a visually-pleasing instrument? Is
condition of plant material     clean? Is the exhibit neat?

·     30%: Written explanation.  Does the printed material explain the
instrument well? Has the exhibitor included a budget and page of

1st place: 90-100                        2ndplace: 80-89

3rd place: 80-89                         Honorable mention: below 70

*Entry forms must be received by February 10, 2011*.
Actual entries must be delivered to the Cobb Galleria on Wednesday, February
23 or Thursday, February 24 between 3 p. m. and 7 p. m.  They must remain on
the Show floor until 4:30 p. m. Sunday, February 27, 2011.  Exhibits,
ribbons and awards should be picked up between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on
that day.  SFS cannot be responsible for items remaining on the Show floor.
Each group entry will receive two students and one adult pass for the show.
