Teachers,

 

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge would like to invite all FFA chapters to participate in the Okefenokee Forestry and Junior Natural Resources Field Day scheduled for Thursday March 31, 2011. Registration will begin at 10am with events starting at 10:30am.

 

Following the practicum events, teams will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt to gather information from 7 exhibit areas with items of interest pertaining to the refuge.

 

Exhibit Areas:

Management: Longleaf Pine Forestry, Wilderness, Timber Sales, Small Producers, GOAL partnership

Using Fire: Prescribed Fire, Wildfire, Fire Wise, Weather

History: Suwannee Canal History and Historic Logging within the Swamp, People of the Okefenokee, Refuge System

Animals of the Okefenokee: Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Gopher Tortoise and Indigo Snakes, Alligators, Snakes, Black Bears

Habitats and Plants: Soil, Invasives, Climate Change

People: Recreation Opportunities, Hunting , Management, Careers, Law Enforcement

Film and Visitors Center

 

Advisors may also arrange for teams to take a boat tour, visit the Chesser Island Homestead, or climb the observation tower after the competition. Boat tours have a fee and must be arranged by the advisor with Okefenokee Adventures: http://www.okefenokeeadventures.com/.

 

Lunch will be provided to participants and awards will be announced at 2pm. The event is open statewide, no registration fee, but please limit chapter participation to 25.
