1.  STUDYING ABROAD IN SPRING 2011?? - REMINDER ABOUT REQUIRED CREDIT APPROVAL FORM

This is a reminder for students attending a non-UGA/external study abroad program or a UGA exchange program (transcript issued by another U.S. or foreign university) to complete the Credit Approval Form and submit the CAF fee to the OIE before you depart for your study abroad program.

 The form serves to let UGA know you will be studying abroad, and to pre-approve your transfer credit, plus to help maintain your eligibility to keep your HOPE and financial aid. (Students attending UGA sponsored programs will receive resident credit instead and do not need to complete this form.)

 The Credit Approval Form will require you to go to the Undergraduate Admissions Office and then to your academic advisor. When it is complete, it should be returned with the CAF fee, to the Office of International Education, Bank of America Building, 3rd Floor, 110 E. Clayton Street, at least 3 weeks prior to departure. You will not receive any financial aid, including the HOPE scholarship, nor maintain student status at UGA while abroad, if you do not fill out this form -- The CAF serves as the official UGA approval for your study abroad program.

What is Travel Registration?

Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an emergency, travel alerts, travel warnings, etc.

Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. U.S. consular officers assist Americans who encounter serious legal, medical, or financial difficulties. Although consular officers cannot act as your legal counsel, they can provide the names of local attorneys and doctors, provide loans to destitute Americans, and provide information about dangerous conditions affecting your overseas travel or residence.

The deadline for all 15 of UGA Costa Rica's Maymester & Summer programs has been extended to March 23, 2011.

Balé Folclórico da Bahia: Traditional Brazilian Music & Dance

Friday, February 18, 2011 AT 8PM

The only professional folk dance company in Brazil, this 38-member troupe of dancers, musicians, and singers performs an athletic, high-energy repertory based on “Bahian” folkloric dances of African origin. Reflecting influences of capoeira (a form of martial arts), samba, slave dances, and Brazil’s famed Carnival; the company embodies a contemporary theatrical vision that nevertheless reflects its traditional origins.

At the Grady College, we're organizing a 1/2 day conference for graduate students across UGA interested in cultural/critical/interpretive research. 6. 2011 Intensive Summer Language Institutes - U.S. State Department fellowship – DUE MARCH 4

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce that the application for the Intensive Summer Language Institutes has been posted online. This program provides fully funded fellowships for U.S. classroom teachers to spend six weeks overseas studying intermediate and advanced-level Arabic and Chinese in Egypt and Mainland China. The Intensive Summer Language Institutes are funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and administered by American Councils for International Education. The program is open to current K-12 teachers and community college instructors of Arabic and Mandarin Chinese, as well as to students enrolled in education programs preparing them to teach these languages. 7.  Global LEAD Program- Leadership and Service Learning– INFO SESSION FEB. 2 MLC ROOM 348 at 6:30pm

The Global LEAD Program focuses on leadership development and service learning.  Students can travel to Cape Town, South Africa or Greece, and both programs are five weeks long during the first part of the summer.  The two Franklin College courses--leadership (FCID 3800) and service-learning (FCID 3900) --are taught by multiple UGA faculty, with several UGA graduate students providing assistance.  Instruction will be through a variety of formats, including lectures, discussions, and field work.  In addition to their UGA coursework, students will participate in the Global LEAD curriculum. 8. Nominations sought for OIE Internationalization Awards – DEADLINE FEB. 21

The Office of International Education invites nominations from the UGA campus community for three internationalization awards: the Richard Reiff Internationalization Award, the OIE Study Abroad Award, and the Open Arms Award.  Descriptions of the awards and the nomination process are given below.  Deadline for receipt of nominations is Monday, February 21st.  Award winners will be honored at the Annual OIE Faculty and Staff Appreciation reception on March 31, 2011.

 Richard Reiff Internationalization Award

 This award is given in honor of Dr. Richard Reiff, former executive director of the Office of International Education at UGA, past president of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, founding executive director of Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society, creator of UGA’s study abroad fair and former chair of the international committee of the University System of Georgia.

 The Reiff Award honors a tenured or tenure-track faculty member who has made major contributions to the overall internationalization of the University of Georgia.  These could include, for example, advancing education abroad opportunities for students, enriching the experiences of international students and scholars at UGA, engaging in significant research of international scope, advancing UGA’s international partnerships and engagement, and promoting campus internationalization.

 OIE Study Abroad Award

 The University of Georgia is among the top institutions in the United States in the number of students studying abroad and a national leader in the number of in-house study abroad programs.  This distinction is possible only through the efforts and dedication of UGA faculty and staff that direct the programs, teach on the programs, administer programs, and advise students about their study abroad option.

 The OIE Study Abroad Award honors a faculty or staff member who has made major contributions to the study abroad effort at the University of Georgia by working directly with a study abroad program and/or contributing to the infrastructure that advances UGA’s overall study abroad effort.  Faculty at all ranks, as well as professional staff members (e.g. academic advisors, program coordinators) are eligible.

 Open Arms Award

 The Open Arms Award is given in honor of Mary Ann Kelly who played a leadership role in the International Student and Scholars and Immigration Services unit of OIE.  Over the years, Ms. Kelly worked tirelessly on behalf of international students, scholars, and faculty on the UGA campus. In addition to her official work on behalf of the university, she also opened her home regularly to those who were far from their homes during the holidays and school breaks.  Her dedication and hospitality serve to inspire all of us to welcome UGA’s international students and scholars with “open arms.”

 The Open Arms Award honors UGA faculty or staff that that have gone above and beyond their formal duties in facilitating the presence of international students and/or scholars at the University of Georgia and making their experience while at UGA productive and positive.

 Application process

9. STUDY ABROAD STUDENT PANEL BLUE CARD EVENT – FEBRUARY 16

Feb 16 at 5:00pm in MLC 268

 

Panelists will be students who have returned from various types of study abroad programs.  The panel will share their experiences abroad and give advice about choosing a program, preparing for travel and culture shock as well as answer questions.  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of what the various student experiences can be during a study abroad program. 

10. STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Gilman Scholarship Program, we are proud to announce the expansion of our summer awards to include all academic majors. 

 -APPLICATION DEADLINES:  MARCH 1 for Summer 2011 AND/OR Fall 2011 (application site opens in January)

 -EILIGIBILITY: 

·               Enrolled as an undergraduate student at a two or four-year U.S. Institution

·               United States citizen

·               Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad

·               Participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks and no more than an academic year

·               Receiving academic credit

·               Study in any country not currently under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Cuba

--b. freeman asia study abroad scholarships – SUMMER & fall 2011, SPRING 2012 & 2012-13

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce that it will re-launch the Freeman-ASIA Program with a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation. 

Freeman ASIA provides financial support to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia.  Award amounts vary from $3,000 - $7,000 depending on the length of study.

 The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.  Upon their return to the U.S., students are required to promote study in Asia by sharing their experiences with peers on their home campuses and in their communities.

Diversity Abroad is pleased to announce the launch of two new scholarships aimed at fostering participation in education abroad among diverse and underrepresented students.

Diversity Network Summer Scholarship

The Diversity in Global Education Network, in partnership with STA Travel will offer summer travel scholarships for students from diverse and underrepresented groups. The scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students at a member institutions based in the Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom or the United States.

Diversity Abroad Achievement Scholarship - offered by AIFS

Do you still want to talk about your study abroad experience? Need an interested audience for your study abroad stories and memories? Want to encourage other UGA students to study abroad?

The Office of International Education is looking for peer advisors for the 2010-2011 academic year. We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels. You can choose to participate in as many events as your schedule permits.
